宣揚中華文句之操縱策略

本章討論宣揚中華文句被操縱的情形。譯者的策略仍可分為明顯改寫文意、完全 不譯/大幅節譯、削弱文意和扭轉敘述視角四種。

第一節 明顯改寫文意/扭轉敘述視角

無獨有偶地,譯者除了干預《鹿鼎記》原作中貶低歐洲國家國格的文句,也改動了 盛讚清朝國勢、中華文化與中國功夫等類型文句的文意,以下有例為證。

首先,筆者發現譯者改寫了一處關於中國武功的文意。

例:

雖然西洋火器厲害,但以他武功,也自不懼,只是正當圖謀大事之際,要倚仗羅剎國大 力支撐,不能因一時之忿而得罪了總督,當下慢慢退到門邊,並不反抗。(原作1492 頁)

譯文:The Leader knew that, against a firearm, all his great strength and skill were of no avail and retreated to the door. (第三卷,171 頁)

評析:原文中,神龍教洪教主自信自己的武功相當高明,因此不怕西洋火器,但譯文卻 指出他自認在俄國總督高里津手持的西洋火器面前,一身武功全無用武之地,意思與原 文完全相反,譯者顯然改寫了文意,吹熄了洪教主一身武藝的光環。

民國以來,武俠小說有一大特色,那就是中國人遇到外國人進逼時,能用功夫克敵,

甚至面對洋槍洋砲,也可百戰百勝。這個特色不只出現在武俠小說,在武俠片,也是如 此,中國人向來對中國功夫引以為傲,功夫是中國的重要國粹,但在《鹿》作英譯本中,

這個國粹卻被譯為不敵外國火器,譯文顯然被改寫。

此外,關於清軍,譯者的看法似乎也與作者不同。

例1:

帳門掀開,一將大踏步進來,正是帶領籐牌兵的林興珠,朗聲說道:「啓稟大帥……」(2023 頁)

譯文:Almost at the same moment an agitated Lin Xingzhu came rushing into the tent.(第三 卷,490 頁)

評析:原文表示清軍籐牌兵大將林興珠邁著大步走進帳門,朗聲說道:「啓稟大帥……」

可見林興珠的神情不是譯文所示的agitated,舉止也非譯者所寫 came rushing into the 50

tent,顯見譯者更動了文意。

在譯者筆下,林興珠像個急燥不安、不知所措的小兵,奔進帳門要向韋小寶討救兵,

與原文中的形象非常不同。

例2:

林興珠蹲下身來,對著桌子底下的韋大帥說道:「啓稟大帥:羅剎兵聲勢洶洶,咱們不 能示弱,要幹就幹他媽的。」(2023 頁)

譯文:’He’s up to something with those Cossacks,’ said Lin Xinzhu. ‘What do you want me to do?’ (第三卷,490 頁)

評析:林說「咱們不能示弱,要幹就幹他媽的」,流露一股軍中將領力抗外敵的豪氣,

顯然林已有定見,認為清軍應奮勇抗敵,並不是要向韋請示對策,但譯者卻將文句改寫 成‘What do you want me to do? ’,從這例與上例可見,林的拼搏氣勢幾乎消失得無影無 蹤,從壯志凌雲的大將變為洩氣的皮球。

例3:

其時風雪正大,天色昏暗,朦朧中見到清軍長壘上擺滿了一棵棵大樹,正疑惑間(1981-82 頁)

譯文:But these strange tree-like objects were another matter. They puzzled him as much as they had the troops. What devilry were the Chinese up to now?(第三卷,473 頁)

評析:“What devilry were the Chinese up to now?”這句話並未出現於原文,應是譯者自行 添加的內容,這句問話顯然是從圖爾布青的角度發出的疑問,使用 devilry 這字描述清 軍,敘述視角明顯與原文有別。

譯者也不樂意看見宣揚中華文化的文句:

例:

心想:「這次死裏逃生,不但保了小命,還幫羅剎公主立了一場大功,全靠老子平日聽 得書多,看得戲多。」

中國立國數千年,爭奪帝皇權位、造反斫殺,經驗之豐,舉世無與倫比。韋小寶所知者 只是民間流傳的一些皮毛,卻已足以揚威異域,居然助人謀朝篡位,安邦定國。……滿 人入關後開疆拓土,使中國版圖幾為明朝之三倍,遠勝於漢唐全盛之時,餘蔭直至今日,

小說、戲劇、說書之功,亦殊不可沒。(1518 頁)

譯文:The ignorant Yangzhou urchin had played a part in history! (第三卷,188 頁) 51

評析:在上述文句中,韋沾沾自喜,因為他憑著愛聽說書和戲曲的嗜好,不但保住自己 的一條小命,還幫俄國公主立功,但譯者未如實譯出這些文句,倒將原文改寫為 The ignorant Yangzhou urchin had played a part in history!短短一句。

既然譯者決定不譯韋對嗜好沾沾自喜的句子,為使文意通暢,也沒有譯出上述有關

Cai Dezhong picked up a sheet of paper from it and read out the Induction oath in a loud, clear voice.

Apart from what it said about the Great Ming being the rightful rulers and expelling the foreign foe, there wasn’t a great deal in it that Trinket could understand. It seemed that they all belonged to a family called ‘Hong’ in which Heaven was their father, Earth was their mother, the sun was their brother, and the moon was their sister. Apart from the surname ‘Hong’, each of them, on entering the Society, acquired the secret name ‘Jinlan’—meaning Golden Orchid (‘What’s the good of a name,’ thought Trinket, ‘if everyone’s got the same one?’). They kowtowed when old Cai read out the words ‘Heaven my father’ and ‘Earth my mother’ and once more for someone called ‘Dragon Brother’ whom Trinket had heard mentioned a couple of times the day before. They were all supposed to have been born on the same day. Old Cai even read out the date. (Trinket knew this didn’t make sense, but decided he’d better not ask about it.) They prayed ‘in the words of the oath made in the Peach Tree Garden’ that they might all die on the same day. And there was more besides.(第一卷,338-339 頁,粗體為筆 者所加。)

陌生,或即使無法完全理解,也已習慣聽聞,因此譯者這個策略使譯文與原文故事的邏 輯衝突。

譯者採取韋小寶的視角寫出那些疑問,應是譯者寫出自己的疑惑,或覺得讀者可能 發出疑問,代替讀者而問(Lai, 1999, 367-368),有點類似電視旅遊節目主持人到了異國,

對於屬於他者(other)的在地文化發出疑問或評論。

上述原文段落後,蔡德忠隨即問韋小寶是否了解誓詞中桃園結義的故事,韋小寶回 答:「劉關張桃園三結義,不願同年同月同日生,但願同年同月同日死。」可見韋小寶 並非如譯文所寫knew this didn’t make sense。關於蔡德忠的詢問,譯者這樣翻譯:

When he had finished reading the oath, Cai Dezhong asked Trinket if he understood the bit about the Peach Tree Garden. Trinket knew about this from the stories in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, all of which he had heard many times over at storytellers’

sessions in Yangzhou.(Minford, 1997, p339)

從以上譯文可見,譯者只譯韋小寶聽桃園三結義聽了很多次,避而不譯「不願同年 同月同日生,同年同月同日死」,採取這個策略後,譯文就不會前後矛盾,譯者干預譯 文時,很認真串連文意。

綜合以上例證,關於宣揚清朝國威和中華文化的句子,譯者主要在人物氣勢和中國 國粹(武功及中華文化)兩方面變動了文意,所以讀者讀到林興珠對抗俄軍時心亂如麻,

洪教主即使貴為教主,在西方火器面前,也自動俯首稱臣,洪、林的氣勢大減,讀者無 法讀到中國小說、說書等的偉大價值,讀到中國結拜組織入會儀式時,甚至感覺韋小寶 頗不以為然,改寫程度不小。

第二節 完全不譯/大幅節譯

譯者也明顯刪修了原作中宣揚中國國威和中華文化的文句,以下提出第47 和 48 回 的例證。

在第47 回,牽涉清朝國力和軍紀的內容幾乎完全未被譯出,包括:

例1:(康熙道:「……)只憑著這五個字,咱們這一戰可操必勝。」(1946 頁)

例 2:康熙道:「羅剎國在雅薩克和尼布楚的騎兵步兵不過六千。咱們以七八倍兵力去對 付,那是雷霆萬鈞之勢了,只盼你別墮了我堂堂中華的國威才好。」韋小寶道:「這一仗 是奴才代著皇上去打的,咱們只消有一點小小挫折,也讓羅剎國人給小看了。皇上儘管 放心。」(1948 頁)

(筆者按:此處「雅薩克」為原作誤植,應為「雅克薩」。)

例3:此時和羅剎國開仗,事無巨細,均以籌劃妥善,大軍未出都門,便已料到此戰必勝

(1957 頁)

例4:其時清朝國勢方強,軍中紀律森嚴。大官如韋小寶、索額圖等不免乘機大發橫財,

軍官士兵卻是一物不敢妄取。(1985 頁)

例5:大營中的師爺寫了一道表章,說道撫遠大將軍韋小寶遵依皇上御授方畧,旗開得勝,

羅剎兵仰慕中華上國,洗心歸順,實乃我皇聖德格天,化及蠻夷云云。(1972 頁)

第五個例子特別有趣。「大營中的師爺寫了一道表章,說道撫遠大將軍韋小寶遵依 皇上御授方畧,旗開得勝,羅剎兵仰慕中華上國,洗心歸順,實乃我皇聖德格天,化及 蠻夷云云。」等文句被譯者刪去不譯,因此「仰慕中華上國」、「洗心歸順」和「化及蠻 夷」等傳達中華民族優越感的詞語都未出現在譯文,譯者只譯出這些文句前面的「韋小 寶命羅剎降兵穿戴清兵衣帽,派一名參降帶領兩千清兵,押解降兵到北京去向皇帝獻俘。

營中留下二十名大嗓子降兵,以備喊話之用。」

上述例子在在展現清軍與外國交戰前的自信、清朝的強盛國勢和嚴明軍紀,金庸在 六 0 與七 0 年代中俄交惡的時空背景下,或許為了激發國人的愛國情操,在每日連載的

《鹿鼎記》故事中放入這類文句,但譯者讓這些文句隱形後,便阻擋了作者的用意。

第47 回藉由貶低俄國來高抬中國的內容也被譯者去除,例如:

例:洪朝率領五百士卒,向羅剎降兵學了些罵人的言語,在城下大聲叫罵。只可惜羅剎 人鄙陋無文,罵人的辭句有限,眾兵叫罵聲雖響,含義卻殊平庸,翻來覆去也不過幾句

「你是臭豬」、「你吃糞便」之類,那及我中華上國罵辭的多采多姿,變化無窮?(1974 頁)

此處的故事背景是,清軍攻打雅克薩城期間,將官洪朝率領官兵向俄軍挑釁,清軍 辱罵俄軍也就罷了,連俄國的罵人用辭也要嘲諷一番,直指俄國不如中華文化。

譯者之所以排除以上段落,可能耽心「羅剎人鄙陋無文」、「含義卻殊平庸」、「那及 中華上國罵辭的多采多姿,變化無窮」等內容會引起一些譯本讀者不滿,原作在「吵架 罵人」這事上都要藉著嘲弄俄國來抬舉中國,恐怕是譯本讀者難以想像的,不過,譯者

「把關」後,第47 回譯文中,誇耀清朝國力和軍紀的內容幾乎完全不見了。
