limiting 直譯成「限制性的」會顯得太過抽象，讀者很難立刻理解「限制性 的想法」是什麼樣的想法。這段文字之前有提到尼泊爾鄉村地區民眾仍認為女 性月經是不潔的象徵，女性月經來潮時會遭遇到許多不公平的對待、甚至身處 險境。所以此處的limiting beliefs 指的就是前文提到的迷思，譯者其實可以直接 把意思翻出來，不該囿於字面的意義。
(三) on the other hand 固定譯成「另一方面」
on the other hand 在英文中通常當成前後句的語氣轉折詞，用來凸顯後句 的觀點或立場和前句相反12，例如：On the one hand, they'd love to have kids, but on the other, they don't want to give up their freedom. (Oxford Learners’ Dictionaries) 此句可譯為「一方面呢，他們想要孩子，但另一方面他們又不想放棄現在的自 由。」由此例可見，這個轉折詞在英文中用來表示前後句描述事物的衝突之 處，可是中文的「另一方面」卻未必具備凸顯正反兩立場的功能。例如，中文 可以說「這次我考試成績不理想，一方面是準備不足，另一方面是太過緊張而 粗心失分。」句中的「另一方面」只是用來說明考不好的另一原因，並非用來 凸顯前後兩個原因的相悖之處。

因此，無論原文的 on the other hand 前面有沒有 but，譯成中文時最好要自 動在前面加上「但是」、「不過」或「然而」，才能準確表達原文文意。

on the other hand 這個轉折詞時常出現於高中英文教材，不過很多學生搞不 清楚on the other hand 和 “For one thing,…For another (thing),…”中的 For another (thing)差在哪裡，主要原因就是這兩個片語幾乎都被翻成「另一方面」。
中文如果用到「另一方面」，常常是拿來補充說明，例如：「她很想辭掉現 在的工作，因為一方面薪水不高，另一方面工時太長。」這種情況如果要翻成 英文就不會用到on the other hand，而是會用 “For one thing…For another (thing),…”這樣的句型。
如果要凸顯前後所提事物的差異或立場相背，中文的「另一方面」之前必 須要加上「但是/然而/不過」，才能夠表達出語氣的轉折，如果沒有加上這樣的 轉折，前後句的邏輯就會變得很奇怪。例如：「他日日夜夜都夢想著成為億萬富 翁。另一方面，他不曾為夢想努力半分。」，比較好的譯法應該是：「他日日夜 夜都夢想著成為億萬富翁，但另一方面，他卻不曾為夢想努力半分。」或是將 後句直接寫成「但卻不曾為夢想努力半分」。
因此筆者認為：on the other hand 根本不用翻譯成「另一方面」，直接譯為
「但是/然而/不過」即可，也可根據情境加上「卻」、「則」等語氣詞強調與前句 所述事物的不同(如例 4)。

本章小結
英語學習雜誌中譯裡詞彙定譯的例子不勝枚舉，究其原因可能有二：一來 有可能是譯者未能充分發揮中文的彈性，太過局限於字典(或以前學生時期英文 課本)提供的少數詞彙釋義；二來有可能是雜誌編輯為了方便讀者中英對照所以 刻意直接用最常見的釋義翻譯，但如此便違背了他們自己寫給讀者的建議，也 不符合多數研究英漢翻譯的學者提出的原則──一個英文詞彙可能有很多種意 思，必須要靠句子的語境來決定它的意義，除此之外也要注意目標語的使用習 慣，才能寫出通順的譯文(廖柏森等人，2013)，否則很有可能會像本章所舉的 例子一樣寫出生硬不自然、令人費解、或甚至是偏離原文文意的譯文。
