What Role for the Arts in Hong Kong After 1997?

A unique gathering of artists, critics, administrators and policy makers will examine 1997's effect on culture during Journey to the East, an innovative mix of performance, exhibition and

discussion forums in January.

In cultural development, the 1997 transition is an opportunity to redefine Chinese culture. That is the starting point of Journey to the East, bringing together artists from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and elsewhere to look to the future.

Journey to the East is presented in three parts:

Performance: Six directors from Hong Kong, Taipei and Beijing will create short

pieces for two performers, using only a standard Beijing opera set - two chairs and a table. Performances will be followed by a roundtable discussion with the directors and theater critics.

Performances: 1-5 January 1997

Roundtable discussion: 5 January 1997

Venue: Shouson Theater, Hong Kong Arts Centre Tickets: $90 and $70

Visual Arts: Six visual artists from Hong Kong, Taipei, Shanghai and Beijing will

create indoor and outdoor installation pieces around the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, again using the theme of two chairs and a table. A discussion of the works will be held with arts critics and scholars. Opening reception: 2:30 pm, 4 January 1997.

Seminar: 3:30 pm, 4 January 1997

Exhibition dates: 4-20 January, Mon-Fri, 1-5 pm, Sat and Sun, 10 am - 6 pm Venue: Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay,

Kowloon

Forums: Five open forums on cultural policy, on information and broadcasting,

public architecture and city planning, libraries and museums, cultural and arts infrastructure, and the relationship between human rights and urban culture. Each forum will examine how Hong Kong can develop a public arena where artists, critics, scholars and policy makers can develop cultural policy.

Forums: 10-11 and 17-18 January 1997 Venue: Hong Kong Cultural Centre

Journey to the East has been jointly developed by the Center for the Arts at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Hong Kong Institute for Contemporary Arts and Culture, supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. The event is part of the Hong Kong International Conference on Urban Culture.
