HKUST Named Global Leader in Engineering

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (21 January 2005) held a ceremony to celebrate being ranked the world's number 20 university for engineering and information technology by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES).

Dr Alice Lam, Chairman of the University Grants Committee, officiated at the celebration, and was joined by Dr John C C Chan, Chairman of the University Council, Prof Paul Chu, HKUST President, and Prof Philip Chan, Dean of Engineering. President Chu said: "In the last year HKUST has been

acknowledged as global leader, in engineering as well as a host of other fields: The University is ranked the overall number 42 tertiary institution in the world by The Times, the number 50 for science, and its EMBA is global number six according to the Financial Times."

"These are remarkable achievements for HKUST, and are a testament to the commitment and contributions of our founders, our faculty and staff, our students, and of course the overwhelming and generous support of the entire Hong Kong community," he added.

"We are proud to be named among the world's most renowned institutions in engineering. The HKUST School of Engineering has consistently proved itself to be a pioneer in building knowledge

and establishing industrial partnerships that translate novel technologies into commercially viable products," said Prof Philip Chan. "We will continue to seek greater collaboration with industry--in IT, logistics and nanotechnology--in order that we can further contribute to the economic development of Hong Kong and the region."

The THES tables are based on a peer review of 1,300 international academics, reflecting the high esteem in which HKUST is held around the world.
