Each one of you has to make the decision about whether you will go off on your own or attend a group tour. There are benefits for both and so you need to determine which meets your needs.

Most of those who take group tours take them for the convenience. When you join a group

tour you don’t have to worry about reserving hotels, being cheated by taxi drivers, or getting lost in airports. You save time deciding where you are going to eat, what you are going to do each day, and where to go to buy souvenirs. You can even overcome language problems when visiting other countries since most group tours also hire tour guides that can speak the local language.

You will find, though, that there are some things that group tours can’t do. First, group tours have a very tight itinerary. Group tours often start early in the morning, meaning you don’t have the opportunity to sleep in if that is what you wish to do. You also keep a very tight schedule. For example, a group tour that visits San Francisco visits 10 spots in one day. This means that you normally only have a few minutes to take pictures, go to the bathroom and see the sites each time you stop. Independent travel on the other hand lets you go at your own pace and allows you to choose the places you want to stop at. Independent travel does allow you to decide where and what type of food you want to eat.

Generally speaking, independent travel requires you to do more of the planning whereas group tours tend to be more convenient. Thus, you need to decide which meets your needs best and then plan accordingly.

51. What is the main idea of this article?

(A) There are more benefits to independent travel. (B) There are more benefits to group tours.

(C) There are benefits to both ways of traveling.

(D) You should choose independent travel if you want more freedom. 52. Which one is NOT about group tours?

(A) You don’t have to worry about reserving hotels. (B) You don’t have to worry about booking flights. (C) You can choose what you want to eat.

(D) Your days are planned for you.

53. What does “very tight itinerary” mean in the third paragraph? (A) You don’t have a lot of space on the tour bus.

(B) You don’t get a lot of freedom in choosing what you want to do. (C) You have a very loose schedule.

(D) You have to do everything they say.

Yayoi Kusama’s work is dominated by polka dots and other repeating patterns. She often uses psychedelic colors, and her work has evolved from paintings to landscape installations, which have made her famous. However, there is a dark secret to all her work. Kusama suffers from hallucinations and obsessive thoughts, which sometimes are suicidal. It is through her art that Kusama is able to manage her illness, using art as a release mechanism.

Kusama was born in Japan in 1929 to a wealthy, conservative family. Her mother severely abused her, and Kusama started showing signs of mental illness during childhood. In the late 1950s, she left Japan and moved to New York City.

Kusama didn’t know anyone in New York City, but she quickly made a name for herself in the local avant-garde art scene. She would often wear traditional Japanese dresses to parties to stand out. She also supported the values of the 1960s by organizing anti-Vietnam War “happening,” in which she would paint polka dots on participants’ naked bodies.

Kusama moved back to Tokyo in the 1970s and placed herself in a mental institution, where she has been for the past four decades. She has a studio down the street from it where she goes whenever she feels the need to create. She once told a journalist, “I don’t want to cure my mental problems; rather, I want to utilize them as a generating force for my art.”

Her well-known Infinity Nets works are canvases up to 30 meters wide with circular patterns. 高一英文P.2

The Little Prince, a slim volume about a boy who travels to earth from a distant galaxy, was

first published in France in 1943. Its lyrical prose and delicate illustrations, both by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, made the winsome tale one of the world’s best known and loved books. Like the narrator of his story, the aristocratic Saint-Exupery was also a pilot, a pioneer of France’s aviation efforts in the 1930s. During World War II, a plane he was flying disappeared somewhere over the Mediterranean. The unexplained crash, on July 31, 1944, became an enduring mystery for the French. There was speculation that the author, who was in low spirits and poor health, deliberately crashed the plane, a Lokcheed Lightning P-38. Countless attempts have been made to find its wreckage, and two years ago a silver identity bracelet engraved with Saint-Exupery’s name and that of his wife, Consuelo, was trawled up in a fisherman’s net. The hunt intensified. Now, Luc Vanrell, a diver from Marseilles, is certain that wreckage he has discovered some 85 m beneath the sea could belong only to Saint-Exupery’s specially modified plane. Vanrell photographed his find, but has refused to divulge its exact location. The author’s family, who guard his memory jealously and are preparing to commemorate the centenary of his birth in just a few weeks, remain skeptical. For them, Saint-Exupery’s remains-and the legend that has grown around his life and mysterious death-are best left undisturbed.

57. Which of the following statements is true?

(A) Like Antoine, the narrator of The Little Prince is also a writer.

(B) The Little Prince is a biography, describing a boy traveling to the Earth from a distant galaxy.

(C) The Little Prince was published only one year before the author’s missing from a plane’s crash.

(D) The illustrator of The Little Prince was a Frenchman, Antoine’s best friend. 58. Which of the following statements is FALSE?

(A) Luc Vanrell, a fisherman, claimed that he had found a silver bracelet belonging to Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

(B) Saint-Exupery family don’t really believe Vanrell’s saying about the find of the crashed

plane.

(C) Antoine was of noble birth.

(D) Some people thought that Antoine crashed the plane on purpose due to his bad health and low spirits.

59. From the passage, we can infer that ________________.

(A) Because of the objection from Saint-Exupery’s family, the attempts to find the plane’s wreckage will be stopped.

(B) Consuelo, Antoine’s wife, was with him when the unexplained crash occurred.

(C) Antoine and his wife had been married for a long time because he engraved her name on his bracelet.

(D) Saint-Exupery might have made some contributions to France’s aviation in the 1930s. 60. What could be the most appropriate title of the article?

(A) The Life and Death of Antoine de Saint-Exupery (B) The Mysterious Death of Antoine de Saint-Exupery (C) The Little Prince-A Fable from a Faraway Galaxy (D) A Diver’s Find in the Mediterranean
