HKUST FORUM ON THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF HONG KONG

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is hosting a 3-session forum to explore some major issues concerning the future economic development of the territory.

Senior Government officials, prominent business and industry leaders, and distinguished academics will take part in the “HKUST Forum on the Future Development of Hong Kong”, which has the following sessions:

29 May Positioning Hong Kong: Pearl River Delta and Beyond 17 June High Tech Entrepreneurship in Hong Kong

12 July The Government’s Role in the Economy

“All these are major issues, on which Hong Kong as a whole would like to see consensus and clear directions. We hope that through informed discussions, we will come closer to finding the directions Hong Kong should take and how we should get there,” said Prof Paul Ching-Wu Chu, President of HKUST.

The Forum is part of the University’s efforts to fulfill its mission of assisting in the social and economic development of Hong Kong. HKUST faculty will be sharing their expert views and facilitating discussions in the Forum.

In the first session, the Financial Secretary, Mr Antony Leung, will be giving the opening address. Four panels will then be convened to discuss how the integration between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta may be deepened in the areas of manufacturing, services, infrastructure and logistics, as well as jobs and human resources. Ms Marjorie Yang, Chairman of the Esquel Group of Companies; Mr Philip Chen, Director and Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Pacific Airways and Council Vice-Chairman of HKUST; Sir Gordon Wu, Chairman of the Hong Kong Port and Maritime Board; and Dr Vincent Lo, Chairman of Shui On Holdings Ltd and Immediate Past Council Chairman of HKUST, are moderators of the panels respectively.

“The changing business environment and ever-advancing technologies have brought huge challenges for both Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta. We hope that the discussions will shed light on the search for ways to enhance the whole region’s competitiveness,” said Prof Otto Lin, Vice-President for Research and Development of HKUST, and Chairman of the first session of the Forum.
