Prof Gary W. Heinke Appointed Director of Institute for Environmental Studies at HKUST

A prominent environmental researcher has been appointed Director of the Institute for Environmental Studies at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. Professor Gary W. Heinke will lead the University’s efforts to advance new technologies for improving environmental conditions in Hong . y’, Kong and the surrounding region.

“We hope for co-operation and collaboration with the Government and the industrial sector in order to upgrade the environmental quality of Hong Kong,” said Prof Heinke. “Educating the community, especially young people, about environmental issues will also be of vital importance. Hong Kong needs well trained and knowledgeable environmental professionals.”

Prof Heinke joins HKUST following a distinguished career as Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, where he was also Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering from 1974 to 1984.

Starting in 1956, Prof Heinke has been an active participant in the consulting engineering field. He has consulted for the Canadian and provincial governments, various industries and a number of consulting engineering firms. . .

Over the past 25 years, Prof Heinke has published and delivered more than 120 papers and technical reports in international journals and conference proceedings. His main research interest in environmental engineering is in the water and wastewater field, with particular emphasis on applications in cold climate regions and in developing countries.

He is a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering, a member of the American Water Works Association and of the Water Environment Federation (USA). He is a registered Professional Engineer of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario and of the North West Territories.
