DEPARTMENT OF

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING AND LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT As we share with delight HKUST’s 20th Anniversary

celebra-tions, IELM can also celebrate a significant year on its own account. Through the terrific efforts of our academics and students, the Department has enjoyed a remarkably successful 12 months. Our professors have been elected to prestigious academic societies, our doctoral students have received Best Student Paper Awards at top conferences and competitions, and our undergraduates have won honors and awards in a number of contests.

In just two decades, HKUST has built a worldwide reputation for the quality of its research and IELM researchers thrive in the cutting-edge environment of frontier studies. Always eager to exchange views with other scholars globally and to bring together leading researchers, we successfully organized the Second POMS-HK International Conference and the 1st Forum for the Council of Industrial Engineering Department Heads in Greater China in January. In addition, we took part in the IIE Asian Conference 2011 in June.

Through these different gatherings, we seized the opportunity to establish close relationships with scholars and experts in differ-ent locations and to share our research insights. IELM research students have also been able to gain additional perspectives and explore different ideas through communication with research-ers from outside Hong Kong.

To enhance the learning experience of our undergraduates, we have continued to offer diversified activities and experiences. Each year, we invite alumni and mentors to share their experi-ence with students at our Alumni Dinner and Mentorship Dinner. Such occasions help students to prepare for the future and to gain a better understanding of how industry works and the career opportunities that await, adding to the knowledge they gain in the lecture theater.

We plan to keep building on our stimulating research and learn-ing environments for faculty members and students and look forward to taking the Department to the next level of achieve-ment in the future.

The conference, which gathers together leading international scholars to exchange their latest research results, saw 5,000 researchers attend and nearly 100 sessions take place. Li’s paper focused on “Multivariate Categorical Charting Techniques via Log-Linear Models” and was also co-authored by Professor Tsung and Zou.

In the first half of 2011, four more IELM PhD postgraduates received awards. In January 2011, Liang Lu, supervised by Profes-sor Xiangtong Qi, received first prize in the Best Student Paper Competition at the Second POMS-HK International Conference, organized by the Production and Operations Management Society -

Hong Kong Chapter. His paper looked at “Cooperation in Recycling with Economy of Scale and Capacity Limit”.

Over 160 mentors and student mentees enjoyed an informal get-together at the IELM Mentorship Dinner in November. The mentorship program provides a great platform for s t u d e n t s t o g a i n i n s i g h t i n t o t h e w o r l d o f i n d u s t r i a l engineering. To help the long-term development of students’ careers, the program offers a channel for students to ask the

Professor Lee also gave a keynote speech at the International Symposium on Scheduling in Osaka, Japan in July 2011. His presentation focused on the “Current Trend of Research in Scheduling: Challenges and Opportunities”. The symposium helped international researchers explore the importance of strategic scheduling as a key technology for industries and increasingly for the service sector as well. Regarding research funding, Professor Lee and Professor Ajay Joneja were awarded a research grant from the I n n o v a t i o n a n d Te c h n o l o g y F u n d f o r t h e i r p ro j e c t “Integrated Decision Support System for Dynamic Vehicle-Dispatching and Scheduling with Real-time Information under Operation Uncertainty”. The project seeks to develop an integrated information technology platform for passenger transport with real-time operations and information exchange to reduce operational costs and improve efficiency.

The study “Transforming Hong Kong’ s Ocean Container Transport Logistics Network”, led by Professor Lee, was one of only six projects out of 89 proposals to be supported in the first round of the Research Grants Council’ s Theme-based Research Scheme. The project received funding of HK$13,292,000. Results were announced in July 2011.
