In 1930, a newspaper predicted the life of Princess Margaret based on astrology. Because of this, people became interested in reading and learning about astrology. Like Princess Margaret, everyone has a star sign 22 to their birthday. Each sign belongs to one of the four categories: fire, earth, air, and water. People
23 under signs in the same category might share similar personality traits. Fire-sign people, for example, are often energetic. Famous examples include Winston Churchill and Napoleon Bonaparte. Most earth-sign people make plans and then take action. That
is 24 they often successfully reach their goals. Air-sign people, who are surrounded by friends, are often communicative. They always learn things from new experiences. Water-sign people are 25 and imaginative. They follow their hearts, not their minds. Astrology is interesting, isn’t it?

[C]Necessity is the mother of invention. Many things are invented to 26 people’s need. Inventions not only solve people’s problems but change people’s life. Take a Taiwanese inventor for instance. Teng Hung-chi, who worked as a mechanic in a factory, was using the bathroom there one day. He did not want to touch the faucet with his dirty hand. “If
I 27 my hand without touching the faucet, it 27 great,” he thought. With this idea in mind, Teng worked hard and finally, at the age of seventeen, he invented a faucet controlled by a built-in sensing device. Another great invention is the Post-it note,
28 inventors are Art Fry and Spencer silver. One day, Silver made a very weak glue when he experimented with several chemicals. Though it was weak, he believed the glue could be useful. Fry, who worked with Silver, 29 the idea of using this weak glue on a piece of paper. In this way, the Post-it note was born and has been a success. [A] “Look out!”- “Oh, no! I’m hit!” Bright red liquid is running down your shirt. You’re dead! This is paintball, an exciting “kill or be killed” action game. Paintgun were originally use by US forest workers to mark trees. When in the 1980s a few foresters shot guns at each other for fun, the game of paintball was born.
Soon rules were made, and paintball developed into a team game. In an area, such as a field or a wood, two teams try to capture each other’s flag, without getting shot. A player firing a paintgun hopes the small paint “bullet” will hit his enemy. If it does, the bullet brusts like a small ballon, leaving a red paint splash mark. The hit player is then “dead,” and is out of the match. It’s a little like “hide and seek,” but with shooting skills required. Players must wear protective goggles over their eyes and ear-covers, to prevent injury to these areas.
Because the game develops teamwork and shooting skills, professionals such as the police and the army now train using special kinds of paintball games. For example, one team may be terrorists in a building, and the other may be policemen on the street.
Paintball has now reached Taiwan. So if anyone asks you for a game of paintball, have fun, but be sure to wear the protective gear. Oh- and watch your back!

[B]Doctors are worried that Taiwanese children are becoming fatter and unhealthier. They give two main reasons for the increasing numbers of overweight youngsters.
Firstly, they have a poor diet. High calorie Western style “fast food” and sugar-filled soft drinks have become popular in Taiwan. Kids enjoy eating fatty food such as McDonald’s burgers and KFC’s fried chicken. Thy also like to drink sodas such as Coca Cola and Pepsi, which contain a lot of weight-adding sugar.
Secondly, young people have a less active lifestyle than before. Children have to study hard in school and at home, which means they have less time to go out to do exercise. It is more convenient for them to spend their free time just playing computer games, or as “couch potatoes” watching TV. As a result of this inactivity, the extra calories in their diet are making children even fatter.
Overweight and unfit youngsters will have major health problems as adults. A high fat and sugar diet makes people more likely to get cancer. Too much body fat can cause people as young as forty to have heart attacks, and too much sugar can cause diabetes and heart diseases. Therefore, doctors are advising the government, parents and schools to educate children about good eating habits, and the benefits of regular exercise. However, this is easier said than done. Taiwan has joined the world’s rich nations, and is experiencing the same health problems as Western countries. It seems that people are getting wealthier, but not healthier.

[C] Every four years, fans of football, or “soccer,” as it is better known in America, look forward to the sport’s most important international tournament—the World Cup. The 2014 World Cup, which was hosted by Brazil, lived up to everyone’s expectations, with an exiting final match that saw Germany defeat Argentina 1-0 inovertime to take home the championship.
This year’s World Cup was certainly full of many memorable moments. Some of the highlights included the strong play of the United States soccer team. Traditionally one of the weaker teams in the tournament, this year’s US team surprised everyone by making it to the round of 16. Although they were defeated 2-1 in overtime by the Belgian team, the amazing performance by the bald, bearded US goalkeeperTimHoward earned worldwide praise, especially with his record-setting 16 saves.
One of the most shocking memories was Brazil’s unbelievable 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals. Not only did Brazil have the home-field advantage, but it was also considered one of the strongest teams in the tournament. The humiliating loss to Germany stunned the entire country, with many Brazilian fans openly weeping over this unexpected and humbling rout.
Another startling World Cup moment that many will remember was the infamous biting incident involving Uruguay’sLuis Suarez. Suarez, known for his unorthodox playing style, was reported to have bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s 1-0 victory over Italy. Later, Suarez apologized and promised never to bite another player again, but FIFA ended up banning him from all football for four months.
World Cup fever certainly was evident in Taiwan, with many people staying up very late —or waking up very early—to watch the matches. Because of the time difference, most World Cup matches started after midnight, with many only kicking off at 3 a.m. Bars and restaurants stayed open late, offering food and drink specials to those who assembled to watch the matches.
Interestingly, Taiwan was also a World Cup winner, thanks to its expertise in polyethyleneterephthalate (PET), which uses recycled plastic to make a comfortable, sweat-absorbent material. Taiwanese textile companies were responsible for the PET materials used in the World Cup uniforms of 10 national teams. According to some reports, Taiwan’s textile companies enjoy a 70 percent market share of the US$40 billion PET recycled clothing sector.
All in all, the 2014 World Cup was one of the best in recent history, with an exciting final match, many highlights, a few lowlights, and plenty for people in Taiwan to cheer about.
