Visitor arrivals by sea and by land decreased by 11.7% and 2.7% respectively year-on-year, while those arriving by air increased by 15.0%.
Visitors from Mainland China decreased by 5.5% year-on-year, with those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (1,006,432) dropping by 4.4%. Visitors from Hong Kong decreased by 7.6% year-on-year, while those from the Republic of Korea and Taiwan increased by 32.1% and 3.3% respectively. Long-haul visitors from the United States and Canada increased year-on-year, while those from Australia and the United Kingdom decreased.
Visitor arrivals totalled 2,882,557, up by 3.1% month-to-month and down by 5.0% year-on-year. Same-day visitors dropped by 12.6% whereas overnight visitors rose by 3.7%. The average length of stay of visitors was 1.2 days, up by 0.1 day year-on-year. Total visitor arrivals in the first eight months were close to the number in the same period of 2015 and the average length of stay of visitors went up by 0.2 day to 1.2 days.
