(C) Hearing loss caused by overuse of headphones on MP3 players is becoming more and more common. The hearing loss caused by MP3 players depends on a number of factors. If you're using headphones and you turn the volume up to about 90% of maximum and you listen a total of two hours a day, five days a week, you could develop 40 decibels (dB) hearing loss—you cannot hear high-pitched sounds below 40 dB. That means you can still hear sounds and understand most speech but cannot focus on what someone is saying when the background-noise level is too loud, making it difficult to communicate.

People using standard headphones can listen at about 80% of maximum volume for 90 minutes per day or less without increasing their risk of hearing loss. But the louder the volume, the shorter your listening time should be. At maximum volume, you should listen for only about 5 minutes a day.

Some in-the-ear headphones are capable of providing a higher volume than some over-the-ear headphones. The type of headphones has little to do with the volume at which people listen. It's all influenced by the level of background noise in their listening environment. Like when flying in an airplane, 80% of people listen at a volume that would eventually put their hearing at risk. On the MRT, the ambient noise levels are as loud as on an airplane. The noise is high enough to encourage people to listen to their headphones at excessively loud volume.

( ) 9. Which is true?

(A) More and more people suffer from hearing loss.

(B) There is no sound below 40 dB.

(C) It is easier to hear speech when focusing on the background noise.

(D) You should always have your MP3 player at 90% of maximum volume.

( ) 10. If you listen at 80% of maximum volume, how long can you safely listen per day?

(B) An hour and a half.

(C) Five minutes.

(D) Three hours.

( ) 11. Which provides a higher volume?
