Cloud Computing

More and more these days our data is not stored on our computers, USB sticks or memory cards, but in the cloud. When you store something in the cloud, you basically store it on the Internet. This gives you access to it anywhere in the world and saves you a whole lot of space on your own personal devices.

But what are the risks of cloud computing? Recently several famous people had their private pictures stolen from the cloud! If you think about it, though, this is a lot like keeping your money in a bank. As soon as you trust someone else to guard your things, you automatically take on some risk. Banks get robbed, too, but rarely.

There are a couple of things you can do, though, to lower the risk of a leak. The first: do your homework. Only trust your data to cloud companies that you're sure are able to protect it well. The second: if you really want to keep it secret, don't put it in the cloud, period.

37.What's the writer's reason for writing this piece?

(A) To advise you on the dangers of cloud computing.

(B) To explain to you how cloud computing works.

(C) To get you to sign up to his cloud computing company.

(D) To tell you how great cloud computing is.

38.What does the writer say cloud computing is like?

(A) Doing lots of homework.

(B) Keeping money in a bank.

(C) Keeping a secret for a friend.

(D) Storing data on a memory card.

【4】 Watch Out! Your Smartphone Can Make You Go Blind

A Canadian teenager recently lost her sight after several hours of watching Netflix on her smartphone, and is still not quite back to 20/20 vision after three months of wearing corrective eyeglasses. It may be rare for such symptoms to last so long. Doctors say, however, that the number of cases of poor vision is increasing rapidly, especially among young gadget-users. What was once mainly a health issue of the aged is now becoming common even among the very young as they spend ever more of their time looking at tiny screens.

The problem, doctors say, is that small print and pictures viewed up close force the eye's muscle to bend more than it should in order to focus. This tires the muscle, often resulting in partial loss of vision by the end of the day.

Happily, common sense is enough to avoid serious eye damage from smartphones. Spending less time on your favorite gadget, and letting your eyes rest before using it again, should make for a safe experience online. So give your eyes a break!

39.What is the main idea of this article?

(A) By making people want to watch TV all the time.

41. What does the word "symptoms" mean in the article?

(C) Having a smartphone. (D) Wearing special eyeglasses.

【5】 Gossiping has long been considered a bad habit. However, a new study shows that being a gossip may be something to be proud of. After testing a group of 300 men and women, Dr. Nicholas Emler decided that gossiping is "fundamental to being human." In his study, Dr. Emler discovered that 80 percent of our time with others is spent sharing social information. Basically, that means we spent 80 percent of our time with others gossiping. This has allowed humans to build societies that are much more complex than other animals'. So, who is gossiping in our complex society, and what are they talking about? According to Dr. Emler, men gossip twice as much as women. In addition, only 5 percent of gossip is mean. Most of the information passed on allows someone to know about other people without actually meeting them. This doesn't mean you should feel free to say bad things, though. By being a responsible gossiper, you can help build a positive society while still enjoying a nice talk with friends.

【6】 Young people today have more problems than they did before. The number one problem has to do with their friends. They care a lot about their friends' thoughts and feelings about them. Sometimes, it takes over their lives because they want their friends to like them. In order to fit in, they even listen to their friends and do bad things.

Another big problem is the Internet. They can search for anything and everything on the Internet.

However, not all the information online is correct, and they might learn the wrong thing. Also, if they can't control themselves, they might not do their homework but play games or chat with friends. What's worse, if their parents don't block bad sites, they may see some bad things. Although the Internet adds convenience to their lives, it doesn't really make them happier.

BTS UN Speech

South Korean boy band Bangtan Boys, also known as BTS, made history by being the first K-pop group to speak at the United Nations (UN) on September 24, 2018. Better known as RM, Kim Nam Joon, the leader of the group, spoke for the band for about seven minutes.

The speech has touched many people around the world. It is about following our inner voice and loving ourselves. RM said that when he was maybe nine or ten, he had started to worry about what others had thought of him. That made him fail to listen to his own voice, and he said, "I, we, all lost our names.

We became like ghosts."

Luckily, there was a calling inside that pushed him to follow music. However, it wasn't simple to become a great singer. He faced a lot of difficulties , including people who were mean to him and thought he was a loser and would fail. Sometimes, he couldn't stand it and wanted to quit, but thanks to his belief, he didn't give up. It is perhaps because he has never quit and has always chosen to follow his inner voice that he has become a successful singer.

At the end of the speech, RM again told people to love themselves. He said, "I'm gonna embrace myself as hard as I can, and I'm starting to love myself gradually just little by little."

In 2017, BTS started working with UNICEF to protect young people from violence. Like Anti- Bullying Day, also called Pink Shirt Day, which started in Canada, their "Love Myself" campaign is changing the world. What about you? What are you going to do to make a difference?

* United Nations (UN)聯合國 * UNICEF 聯合國兒童基金會
