EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS

JUNE/2002 No. 6

In June 2002, the value of total exports of Macao, at 1.84 billion Patacas, was 1.1% less than that in June 2001. Among this, the value of domestic exports decreased 9.8% to 1.43 billion Patacas, while the value of re-exports increased 49.4% to 411 million Patacas. On the other hand, the value of imports was 1.84 billion Patacas, increased 3.5% over June 2001. Taking exports and imports together, a trade surplus of 5.18 million Patacas was recorded.

For the period of January – June 2002, the value of total exports showed a year-on-year decrease of 0.1% to 8.51 billion Patacas. Among this, the value of domestic exports fell 6.2%, whereas the value of re-exports rose 26.0%. Meanwhile, the value of imports amounted to 9.73 billion Patacas, increased 1.2%

over a year earlier.

During the first six months of 2002, the trade balance stood at a deficit of 1.22 billion Patacas. At the same time, the exports/imports ratio decreased to 87.5% from 88.6% registered in the corresponding period of 2001.

For the period of January – June 2002, the value of Textile and garment exports accounted for 82.3% of total exports. Comparing with the same period of 2001, the change in value of total exports reflected an increase of 1.5% in Textile and garment, but a decrease of 7.1% in Non-textile . Machines and apparatus, parts and accessories thereof and Footwear, being the major components of Non-textile , dropped significantly by 28.8% and grew by 10.8% respectively.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, adding up to contribute 69.7% to total exports. Among this, the value of exports to the USA, accounted for 46.0% of total exports, increased 1.7% over a year earlier. Nevertheless, the value of exports to the EU, accounted for 23.7% of total exports, decreased 14.9%. In the Asian markets, Mainland China and Hong Kong absorbed 23.5%

of the value of total exports. Comparing with the first six months of 2001, the value of exports to Mainland China surged 51.9%, while the value of exports to Hong Kong recorded a notable decrease of 16.5%.

For the period of January – June 2002, the value of imports increased by 1.2% year-on-year.

When analysing by broad economic category, increases were registered for Consumer goods (+15.6%) and Capital goods (+1.3%). On the contrary, decreases of Fuels and lubricants and Raw materials and semi-manufactures were recorded at 11.6% and 5.9% respectively.

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods still concentrated in the Asian region.

Among them, Mainland China and Hong Kong occupied 55.4% of total imports. Comparing with the period of January – June 2001, the value of imports from Mainland China increased 1.6%, whereas the value of imports from Hong Kong rose 14.9%. Furthermore, a decrease was registered in the value of imports from the EU (-9.6%) but an increase was recorded from the USA (+3.3%), which accounted for 11.8% and 4.8% of total imports respectively.
