史密斯為美學與教育學者，同時身兼編輯多年，其書籍期刊著作甚豐，論述 遍及美學、藝術教育、藝術課程及教育政策等，本研究旨在探討其藝術課程理論，
因此研究範圍主要以其藝術課程理論為主要詮釋資料，將之區分為主要文獻、次 要文獻與相關文獻。主要文獻有史密斯所著《藝術教育中的卓越》、《卓越二：持
續探索藝術教育》；次要文獻包含史密斯所著《藝術感：審美教育研究》(The sense of art: A study in aesthetic education)，包含史密斯的審美教育概念；相關文獻則為 史密斯藝術教育的相關文獻，包括他其他的著作，以及相關的參考資料。本研究 文獻詳如下所示：
壹、 主要文獻
主要文獻為史密斯於 1987 年專論藝術教育課程理論之英文著作，並於 1995 年接續前書概念，更深入闡釋其藝術教育理念，可見史密斯思想之演變與釐清前 書概念及質疑。

貳、 次要文獻
史密斯於 1989 年出版有關審美教育之研究，其中對藝術教育亦有著墨，可 作為進一步充實其美學及藝術教育理念之參考，此本書由大陸學者滕守堯譯為中 文，並列為次要文獻。此外史密斯於 1991 所著《藝術教育：批評的必要性》，以 及 2006 年由卲漢根(George Geahigan)寫序的《教育中的文化和藝術：塑造人類 經驗的批冹散文》(Culture and the arts in education : Critical essays on shaping human experience.)一書亦有他多年來的著作集成，另有他尚未出版的《持續的審 美教育》(On being aesthetically educated.)3，說明其理論發展源由，皆列為次要文 獻如下所示：
