近 20 年過去，1894 年寫成的《湯姆出國記》有一段描述湯姆、赫克和吉 姆，意外坐上熱氣球，飄流到沙哈拉沙漠。那時，湯姆說了《天方夜譚》裡一 個有關寶山的故事，裡頭有僧侶和吝嗇的趕駱駝的人。聽完這個故事，他們有 一段討論：
吉姆聽了之後說，這件事是對他的一個教訓。
「是阿，」湯姆說道，「是一個教訓，跟一個人一生得到的許多教訓一樣。
但教訓又有什麼用呢？（…）」
「可是，湯姆少爺，世界上的確有這樣的事情，叫做『吸取教訓』，聖經 上也說過：『被燒傷過的孩兒不碰火』。」
「嗯，我並不否認某些事情是教訓，只要他們能以同樣的方式發生兩次。
這種事情有不少，都能給人啟發——阿布納叔叔經常這麼說。（…）不過，
我可以告訴你，吉姆，阿布納叔叔最瞧不起一種人，那就是從每件事情中 都想得到教訓的人 （…）」243

如同筆者於上一節的結論中說到的，馬克吐溫在作品中往復地寫著特定的 主題。延續《湯姆歷險記》與《赫克歷險記》的故事設定，馬克吐溫在 20 年後 找到一個機會直言「最討厭任何事都想得到教訓的人」。兒童角色們在《湯姆 出國記》中，因為長久處在熱氣球中，所以有許多對話的機會，他們總是在討 論著什麼。而在差不多時間出版的《湯姆探案記》中，湯姆不同於《湯姆歷險 記》中為醉漢波特作證時那麼膽怯害怕：
當湯姆站起來，走到證人席上的時候，人們都懷著極大的興趣，迷惑不解 的盯著他。這孩子因為受到過分驚嚇，看起來有點驚慌失措。244
《湯姆探案記》中也有湯姆上法庭的情節，這一次他是為了幫姨丈辯護，
依該州的法律他的「身分幾乎就等同於律師」245，除了地位的上升，這次的他 還懂得以停頓的方式加強發言的效果，整個氣定神閒。
他不慌不忙地說：「庭上，我能說幾句話嗎？」246
即使如此，如同動物寓言或《湯姆歷險記》寫過的，「湯姆受到大家這樣 的愛戴，成為他口中的『英雄』，真令他得意忘形」247，喜歡得到他人推崇這 點，他是一點也沒變。本論文主要著墨於馬克吐溫 1865-1876 年的作品，許多 重要主題在這時期也已顯現，不過從他晚年的續集故事中或許也還能發現一些 以上所說的新東西。

And you ought not to attempt to make a forcible swap with her unless your conscience would justify you in it, and you know you are able to do it.

You ought never to take your little brother's “chewing-gum” away from him by main force; it is better to rope him in with the promise of the first two dollars and a half you find floating down the river on a grindstone. In the artless simplicity natural to this time of life, he will regard it as a perfectly fair transaction. In all ages of the world this eminently plausible fiction has lured the obtuse infant to financial ruin and disaster.
If at any time you find it necessary to correct your brother, do not correct him with mud—never on any account throw mud at him, because it will soil his clothes. It is better to scald him a little; for then you attain two desirable results. You secure his immediate attention to the lesson you are inculcating, and, at the same time, your hot water will have a tendency to move impurities from his person—and possibly the skin also, in spots.

If your mother tells you to do a thing, it is wrong to reply that you won't. It is better and more becoming to intimate that you will do as she bids you, and then afterward act quietly in the matter according to the dictates of your better judgment.
You should ever bear in mind that it is to your kind parents that you are indebted for your food and your nice bed and your beautiful clothes, and for the privilege of staying home from school when you let on that you are sick.
Therefore you ought to respect their little prejudices and humor their little whims and put up with their little foibles, until they get to crowding you too much.
