Research Topic: A Study on Water-Based Fire Protection System and Its Commissioning.

The methodology of Water-Based Fire Protection System. Cx will be based on the interplay and development of four stages namely: planning/design, installation/supervision, inspection/rewinding and running /maintenance etc.

2. The Origin

Water is widely known as the most important material on earth. It’s easily obtained and will not cause any pollution after being used in fire extinguishing.

Thus, water becomes an excellent fire protection agent. Since 18th century, people began to assemble the pipes and compressor to use as hydrant and sprinkler nowadays for fire extinguishing. While developing the procedures of water-based fire protection system, American people gradually understood the importance of how water pressure and water flow influence the result of fire extinguishing efficiency. Furthermore, pipe friction loss and water support capacity were also taken into consideration. A guideline to fire office operating was finally

completed, which also makes the predecessor of NFPA’s rules.

Water-based fire protection system contains many. However, the study will only address hydrant system and sprinkler system as they are most frequently utilized in fire extinguishing. The research topic will be according to the buiding’s height, space volume, floor area or harzadous factors for design, and should the designers be prescriptive-based or performance-based. Further, should water-based fire protection system use hydraulic solfware to calculate the precise flow rate and pressue in nozzle? Should water supply be used with dual support instead of single support? And should pipe’s friction loss owing to corrosion which results in frequent replacement be considered?

Recognizing the importance and complexity of water-based fire protection system in hydrant system and sprinkler system, the study is divided into four stages and based on the continuity and systems engineering in this plan. The four stages are planning /design, installation /supervision, inspection /rewinding and running /maintenance respectively, each stage is interrelated and with its own feedback checking list. In this project, the feedback of verification can be used as an auxiliary to self-checking;

moreover it can be extended to a third party commission of the water-based fire

protection system. The so-called vertical-horizontal checking method in this project provides a set of coherent, whole and simple lists for operators to validate the water-based fire protection system during its life cycle and highly inhace its reliability

3 Research Contents

This study begins with the survey of relevant bibliographies of Europe, US, China and Hong Kong to even out the differences in perception and methods. Through the visitations, consultations, discussions and advice with scholars, practicing engineers and equipment manufacturers, the related analysis and governing laws and regulations of water-based fire protection system thus be achieved. The corresponded lists of the four stages are generated after practiced tests. The set of lists can be treated as a guideline of key points or be used as an auxiliary handbook to make each stage much reliable to deal with. Without doubts, the overall reliability and characters of automatic fire alarm system are also increased with reliability improvement in each stage.

The Chinese Fire Protection Safety Center and the Taiwan Fire Technology Foundation are two institutes to certificate those devices in domestic presently. The introduced of UL, CNS or ISO to those fire devices to make Double Certification of Product is helpful to internationalization

2. Introduce three party commission systems to overall fire alarm system as advanced countries such as the United States.

3. Establish supervision to check construction quality control systems to ensure integrated and coherent implementation of the quality assurance system.

4. It is helpful to establish an easy operation, replaceable, maintenance system to reduce overall design, construction, inspection and maintenance problems about construction technology, concept process and coordination.
