HKUST's New Center Unravels the Web for Hong Kong's Software
Industry
The new Cyberspace Center at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology goes "on-line" on 24 September, ready to help Hong Kong's software industry boost business through the Internet and the World Wide Web.
Mr Francis Ho, JP, Director-General of Industry, and Prof Chia-Wei Woo, President of HKUST will
inaugurate the Center. Demonstrations of the latest Internet and Web technologies will follow the ceremony. The idea for the Cyberspace Center grew from a 1995 study by the Hong Kong Government Industry
Department. The study concluded that Hong Kong's software industry could become more competitive in world markets by making more effective use of the Internet and World Wide Web as business tools. "In such a fast-moving industry, access to up-to-date information is vital. A major function of the Center will be to offer practical advice to help companies use the networks more effectively," says Prof Samuel Chanson, Director of the Cyberspace Center.
The Center is supported by a $3.63 million grant from the Hong Kong Industry Department. Its services will include seminars, guidebooks, evaluation and technical assistance, as well as researching and developing new cyberspace technologies.
Details of the Inauguration Ceremony are as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 24 September 1996
Venue: 7/F Foyer, Academic Building, HKUST (via lifts 13-15) Time: 2:30 pm
