Due to the scarcity of land resources in Taiwan, there has been an ever-increasing emphasis on environmental consideration in land use planning over the past decade. From economical point of view, the competitive price of the land would decide the land use pattern. However, land resource is the main resource base for future living. With "Sustainable development" placed so high on the national policy agenda today, it becomes a necessity to set to work at land development classification for national environmental planning.
Nevertheless, land resource having the complexity itself, includes two facets of problems: the first facet is the spatial difference, i.e. land resource of different spatial location possessing different characteristics; and the other facet is that even the same land does include multiple attributes of different geological, soil, and hydrological features. Besides, these environmental attributes generally are interdependent. Hence, this study designs a spatial analysis model to analyze land classification in environmental aspects with consideration of the attribute of lands. Spatial multivariate analysis and geographical information system (GIS) are integrated to synthesize spatial data. This model can make a more systematical classification, the results and provide a basis upon which lands can be planned and developed.
Finally, an analysis of the comparison between the classification results and current land development is made. This integrated application of satellite image data shows the potential value for environmental management.
