VISITOR ARRIVALS
In light of the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the neighbouring places, visitor arrivals in May 2003 recorded a significant drop of 36.8% over May 2002 to 596,628.
Visitors came mainly from Hong Kong (48.8%), Mainland China (45.3%) and Taiwan (2.9%). Same- day visitors accounted for 47.0% of the total arrivals at 280,254.
In the first five months of 2003, there were 4,252,881 visitor arrivals, a decrease of 7.8% over the same period of 2002. Same-day visitors shared 46.3% of the total arrivals, with 1,969,512.
Compared with the first five months of 2002, the cumulative number of visitor arrivals by sea was 1,900,097 (-19.7%), in which 1,856,868 (-19.5%) arrived at the Outer Harbour. Arrivals by land totalled at 2,121,430 (+13.1%), among whom 2,035,961 (+13.8%) arrived through the Border Gate and 85,469 through the Checkpoint of CoTai. Arrivals by air reached 231,354 (-38.1%), of which 227,019 (-38.3%) arrived at the Macao International Airport.
