Design (Consumption) and Culture

課程目標(專業、人格發展):

1. To clarify key concepts and their inter-relationships including culture, consumption, consumer society, art and design, beauty, taste, dress and change. Learn about related theories and issues for a better understanding of the fashion phenomena and its role in the modern world.

2. To engage students to reflect on the cultural significance and influential role of fashion and

“fashion-makers”: designers, producers, distributors, marketers, advertisers/ promoters, retailers,

consumers, media

3. To observe, reflect, and critically analyze relevant aspects of local cultural trends and practices

(textiles and fashion-related or unrelated)

4. To observe, reflect and critically analyze international trends and practices in the textiles and

fashion world from a cultural development perspective.

5. (To strengthen English language ability and professional terminology) (To promote cooperative and inter-active learning.)

授 課 方 式 :Design and Culture (Design, Culture and Consumption): lecture, reports, discussions, guest lecturer;

評分方式:

Preparation and Participation 30%;Attendance/ Punctuality 5%;Reports (2 oral; 1 written) 40%;

Examination 25%

Assignments:

1. Study the assigned chapters or articles thoroughly, so as to understand the central issues involved, to answer review questions, discuss the content, raise new questions, give examples, ask yourself: what have I learned from this article?.

2. After mid-term prepare a written report (to be presented orally to the whole class) o n local cultural

development s related to any of the key concepts under discussion in this course (not necessarily textiles and fashion related) that you find worthwhile to reflect upon and to discuss critically or on international trends and practices in the textiles and fashion world . Two students work cooperatively on the same report. (oral and written)

Content of papers should include:

(1) Adequate description of the cultural phenomenon observed (facts!) (what’s going on?) (2) Analysis of the cultural phenomenon (underlying factors or issues!)(why is this happening?)

(3) General evaluation of the cultural phenomenon (what constructive or destructive impact does this cultural

development have?) (what will be the results of this happening?)

(4) Personal critical evaluation of the issue under discussion (how do I personally judge the situation?) (5) What ought to be done to encourage or discourage the development (what should/can be done about it?) (6) What can I do about it?
