No. 2 (Supplement) In the second quarter of 2004, Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) extended the coverage of this survey to include the Gaming Industry, but exclude junket promoters and junket associates.

Information on the number of employees, number of vacancies and earnings is given as follows:

Number of Paid Employees

At the end of the second quarter of 2004, there were 19.772 persons engaged in the Gaming Industry, all of them were paid employees, where the male to female ratio was 1.1 to 1.

Classified by occupation, around 60% (11.774 persons) were “Clerks”

, the majority were Hard and soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, dealers, betting service operators, etc., with 10 645 persons, among them, 57.2% were female.

“Services and sales workers” accounted for 23.1% of the total number of employees, most of them were Casino and slot machine attendants / hosts, security and surveillance workers, etc., with 3.589 persons, and 64.8% were male.

Among these employees, 90.3% (17.853 persons) were full-time workers, while 9.7% (1.919 persons) were part-time workers. The majority of part-time workers (1.776 persons) were “Clerks”, such as Tele-betting, cash betting operators and customer service attendants.

At the end of June 2004, there were 4 925 vacant posts to be filled in the Gaming Industry, with 3.517 vacancies in “Clerks”, 1.024 vacancies in “Services and sales workers” and 297 in “Unskilled workers”.

In terms of the recruitment prerequisites, approximately 10% of the vacant posts required

“Professional experience”. More than 70% of the vacant posts required Senior Secondary education or higher in “Academic achievement”. Besides Cantonese, Mandarin (91.1%) and English (71.7%) were the required language skills.

Earnings

In June 2004, the average earnings for full-time paid employees in the Gaming Industry was MOP 10.881, the average for resident workers was MOP 10.031, for non-resident workers, the average was MOP 20.105.

Average earnings of “Clerks”, which constituted the majority of employees, was MOP 11.853, of which the average for Hard and soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, dealers, betting service operators, etc. was MOP 11.995. For “Services and sales workers”, average earnings was MOP 6.310, of which average earnings for Casino and slot machine attendants / hosts, security and surveillance workers, etc. was MOP 6.182.
