SURVEY ON MANPOWER NEEDS AND WAGES

MANUFACTURING, HOTELS, RESTAURANTS,

INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL INTERMEDIATION ACTIVITIES 1st QUARTER / 2011

No. 1

Survey coverage for the first quarter of 2011 comprised Manufacturing; Electricity, Gas & Water Supply; Hotels & Restaurants; Insurance and Financial Intermediation Activities sectors, excluding own-account workers, as well as insurance agents and brokers not directly employed by insurance companies. Information on the number of employees, vacancies and earnings was extrapolated based on the data obtained from 521 statistical units successfully interviewed. Starting from the first quarter of 2011, information pertaining to the Banking sector is published in a separate report.

Paid Employees

At the end of the first quarter of 2011, the Manufacturing sector had 12 455 paid employees, down by 18.1% year-on-year, with those working in Manufacture of Textiles and Manufacture of Wearing Apparel decreasing significantly by 37.1% and 31.4% respectively.

The Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sector had 1 062 paid employees, up slightly by 0.5% over the first quarter of 2010.

Hotels & Restaurants had 53 921 paid employees, up by 11.7% year-on-year, with 35 163 working in hotels.

The Insurance sector had 452 paid employees, a year-on-year increase of 3.9%; Financial Intermediation Activities had 424 paid employees, down by 4.1%.

Vacancies and Turnover of Employees

At the end of the first quarter of 2011, the Manufacturing sector reported 1 221 vacancies, down by 236 year-on-year; Hotels & Restaurants had 4 686 vacancies, an increase of 990; the Insurance sector and Financial Intermediation Activities offered 20 and 24 vacancies respectively.

Job vacancy rate of the Manufacturing sector; Hotels & Restaurants; the Insurance sector and Financial Intermediation Activities registered year-on-year increase.

In respect of working experience, more than 50% of the vacancies in the five surveyed industries required working experience.

Regarding educational attainment, 61.0% of the vacancies in the Manufacturing sector and 64.8%

of those in Hotels & Restaurants required junior secondary education or lower; meanwhile, all of the vacancies in the Insurance sector and Financial Intermediation Activities required senior secondary education or higher.

Besides Cantonese, Mandarin was the more preferable language skill for the vacancies in the Financial Intermediation Activities and in Hotels & Restaurants, at 100.0% and 58.0% respectively;

meanwhile, for those in the Insurance sector, Financial Intermediation Activities and Hotels &

Restaurants required knowledge of English at 85.0%, 60.0% and 43.1% respectively.

The employee turnover rate of the five industries registered year-on-year increase in the first quarter of 2011, with that of the Manufacturing sector and Financial Intermediation Activities rising by 3.7 and 1.5 percentage points respectively.

In addition, the employee recruitment rate also increased from a year earlier, with that of Hotels

& Restaurants rising by 6.8 percentage points to 12.8%.

Earnings

In March 2011, the average earnings of full-time employees of the Manufacturing sector rose by 11.8% year-on-year to MOP6 460. Average earnings of Weaving & spinning machine operators and Knitting machine operators were MOP4 650 and MOP2 550 respectively, and that of Sewing machine operators was MOP3 590.

Average earnings of full-time employees of the Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sector held stable from a year earlier at MOP22 240.

In Hotels & Restaurants, average earnings of full-time employees stood at MOP10 700, up by 7.3% over March 2010. Waiters/waitresses of Hotels and Restaurants earned an average of MOP7 030 and MOP6 250 respectively, while Housekeeping staff earned MOP6 570.

Full-time employees of the Insurance sector had an average earnings of MOP18 750, up by 3.0%

over March 2010; average earnings of those of Financial Intermediation Activities, increased by 5.7%

to MOP11 730.

y Job vacancy rate – the percentage of vacant posts in the total number of full-time employees and vacant posts at the end of the reference quarter.

y Employee turnover rate – the percentage of full-time employees leaving employment in the average total number of full-time employees in the reference quarter.

y Recruitment rate – the percentage of newly recruited full-time employees in the average total number of full-time employees in the reference quarter.

y Earnings refer to the amount paid to employees for the hours worked or services provided during the reference period, including basic salary, regular allowances, subsidies, gratuities, overtime payments and regular payments-in-kind. Excluding double-pay, year-end bonuses, profit-sharing and other similar bonuses.
