MANUFACTURING, HOTELS, RESTAURANTS,

INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL INTERMEDIATION ACTIVITIES 3rd QUARTER / 2011

No. 3

Survey coverage for the third quarter of 2011 comprised Manufacturing; Electricity, Gas & Water Supply; Hotels & Restaurants; Insurance and Financial Intermediation Activities sectors, excluding own-account workers, as well as insurance agents and brokers not directly employed by insurance companies. Information on the number of employees, vacancies and earnings was extrapolated based on the data obtained from 529 statistical units successfully interviewed.

Paid Employees

At the end of the third quarter of 2011, the Manufacturing sector had 11 809 paid employees, down by 13.2% year-on-year, with those working in Manufacture of Wearing Apparel and Manufacture of Textiles decreasing significantly by 29.1% and 28.7% respectively.

The Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sector had 1 067 paid employees, down slightly by 0.1%

year-on-year.

Hotels & Restaurants had 58 088 paid employees, up by 17.2% year-on-year, with 38 165 working in hotels.

The Insurance sector had 459 paid employees, a year-on-year increase of 1.5%; Financial Intermediation Activities had 389 paid employees, down by 4.7%.

Vacancies and Turnover of Employees

At the end of the third quarter of 2011, the Manufacturing sector reported 1 202 vacancies, down significantly by 42.0% year-on-year; Hotels & Restaurants had 7 425 vacancies, an upsurge of 60.4%;

meanwhile, both the Insurance sector and Financial Intermediation Activities offered 19 vacancies.

Except the Manufacturing sector, job vacancy rate of all the other four industries registered year-on-year increase.

In respect of working experience, more than 50% of the vacancies in the five surveyed industries required working experience.

Regarding educational attainment, 70.4% of the vacancies in the Manufacturing sector required junior secondary education or lower; meanwhile, 77.8% of the vacancies in the Electricity, Gas &

Water Supply sector and all of those in the Insurance sector required senior secondary education or higher.

Besides Cantonese, all the vacancies in Financial Intermediation Activities required knowledge of Mandarin and English; the respective percentages for those in Hotels & Restaurants were 72.7% and 62.9%; meanwhile, 84.2% of the vacancies in the Insurance sector required knowledge of English.

The employee turnover rate of Financial Intermediation Activities (6.7%) and the Manufacturing sector (7.9%) increased by 2.9 and 1.4 percentage points respectively year-on-year, while the respective rate of the Insurance sector (4.7%), Hotels & restaurants (7.2%) and the Electricity, gas &

water supply sector (1.9%) fell by 1.8, 0.6 and 0.5 percentage points.

In addition, the employee recruitment rate of the five industries registered year-on-year increase in the third quarter of 2011, with that of Financial Intermediation Activities and the Manufacturing sector rising by 4.8 and 1.6 percentage points respectively.

Earnings

In September 2011, average earnings of full-time employees of the Manufacturing sector rose by 7.1% year-on-year to MOP6 940. Average earnings of Weaving & spinning machine operators and Knitting machine operators were MOP5 240 and MOP3 810 respectively, and that of Sewing machine operators was MOP3 480.

Average earnings of full-time employees of the Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sector stood at MOP23 430, an increase of 4.3% from a year earlier.

In Hotels & Restaurants, average earnings of full-time employees increased by 5.2% year-on-year to MOP10 750. Waiters/waitresses of Hotels and Restaurants earned an average of MOP7 310 and MOP6 260 respectively, while Housekeeping staff earned MOP6 760.

Full-time employees of the Insurance sector had an average earnings of MOP19 300, up by 6.6%

over September 2010; average earnings of those of Financial Intermediation Activities increased by 11.7% to MOP12 990.

y Job vacancy rate – the percentage of vacant posts in the total number of full-time employees and vacant posts at the end of the reference quarter.

y Employee turnover rate – the percentage of full-time employees leaving employment in the average total number of full-time employees in the reference quarter.

y Recruitment rate – the percentage of newly recruited full-time employees in the average total number of full-time employees in the reference quarter.

y Earnings refer to the amount paid to employees for the hours worked or services provided during the reference period, including basic salary, regular allowances, subsidies, gratuities, overtime payments and regular payments-in-kind. Excluding double-pay, year-end bonuses, profit-sharing and other similar bonuses.
