The survey coverage of manpower needs and wages of the Gaming Industry for the fourth quarter of 2008 excluded junket promoters and junket associates.

Paid Employees

At the end of the fourth quarter of 2008, there were 43 835 paid employees engaged in the Gaming Industry, down by 2.0% and 3.9% respectively over the fourth quarter of 2007 and the second quarter of 2008.

Among the occupations that are directly related to betting services, there were 18 196 dealers, down by 6.5% and 5.1% respectively over the fourth quarter of 2007 and the second quarter of 2008;

meanwhile, 11 874 were engaged as hard and soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc., up by 7.7% and 2.3% respectively above-mentioned periods.

In addition, 5 059 were working as casino and slot machine attendants/hosts, security and surveillance workers, etc., down by 5.3% and 5.4% respectively over the fourth quarter of 2007 and the second quarter of 2008.

Vacancies

At the end of December 2008, the Gaming Industry reported a total of 258 vacancies, down notably by 92.4% and 66.2% respectively compared with December 2007 and June 2008. Amongst the vacancies, 28 (10.9%) were for dealers, 59 (22.9%) for hard and soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc., and 41 (15.9%) for services and sales workers.

In terms of recruitment prerequisites, 55.0% of the vacancies required no working experience;

79.4% required senior secondary education or higher and 13.6% required junior secondary education.

Besides Cantonese, other preferred language skills were Mandarin (66.3%) and English (67.4%).

In December 2008, the average earnings for full-time employees in the Gaming Industry stood at MOP15 626, up by 4.9% and 0.4% respectively over December 2007 and June 2008, with the average earnings for full-time resident and non-resident employees at MOP14 994 and MOP22 745 respectively.

The average earnings for dealers grew by 6.0% and 1.2% respectively over December 2007 and June 2008 to MOP13 947, and that for employees in positions such as hard and soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc. stood at MOP19 520, which rose by 6.6% and 3.8% respectively. In addition, services and sales workers earned an average of MOP9 338, up by 4.2% and 1.7% respectively over December 2007 and June 2008.
