“Please turn off your cell phone and leave it off until we have arrived at the gate. The use of cell phones is not allowed during flight.” This familiar statement may soon become a sound of the past. To the delight of many travelers and the anxiety of others, the use of mobile phones will no longer be banned on aircraft in the near future.
New technology will allow airline passengers to use their cell phones while traveling without causing problems for the mobile networks on the ground. Airlines will be able to have small base stations right on the planes, and passengers’ phones will make contact with the plane’s base station instead of the ground station. The signals will then be sent from the plane’s station to the mobile network by satellite with no interference to the networks.
Interruption to other passengers, though, is another story. While airlines are eager to allow the convenience of in- flight cell phone use, they also are aware that their customers will resent the noise while they are trying to watch a movie, listen to music, or just relax. They are trying to find ways to keep everyone, cell phone users and non-users alike, happy during their flight. The new technology solves only half of the problem.
39. In the first paragraph, the expression “This familiar statement may soon become a sound of the past” refers to the fact that _____.
(A) passengers will be allowed to use their cell phones on the aircraft
(B) the crew on the aircraft will no longer make any statements about cell phone use because most passengers
pay no attention to them
(C) the ringing of cell phones will no longer bother passengers on the aircraft
(D) the announcement that asks passengers not to use their cell phones has been annoying, so airlines decide to cancel it
40. Which of the following statements about the way cell phones send signals is true?
(A) Signals sent by the base stations on the aircraft take more time and cost more money.
(B) The base stations on the aircraft will cause fewer problems than those on the ground.
(C) Cell phones can better send and receive signals if used on the aircraft.
(D) Signals sent by satellite will do less harm to the cell phone.
41. It can be inferred from the passage that airlines _____.
(A) worry that cell phone use will put the safety of the aircraft at risk
(B) believe that the majority of their customers will be happy to be able to use their phones on the aircraft (C) expect passengers to register their cell phone numbers before boarding
(D) understand that they will need to deal with customer complaints about cell phone use, with or without the ban of it

Animals are a favorite subject of many photographers. Cats, dogs, and other pets top the list, followed by zoo animals. However, because it’s hard to get them to sit still and “perform on command,” some professional
photographers refuse to photograph pets.
One way to get an appealing portrait of a cat or dog is to hold a biscuit or treat above the camera. The animal’s longing look toward the food will be captured by the camera, but the treat won’t appear in the picture because it’s out of the camera’s range. When you show the picture to your friends afterwards, they’ll be impressed by your pet’s loving expression.
If you are using fast film, you can take some good, quick shots of a pet by simply snapping a picture right after calling its name. You’ll get a different expression from your pet using this technique. Depending on your pet’s mood, the picture will capture an interested, curious expression or possibly a look of annoyance, especially if you’ve
awakened it from a nap.
Taking pictures of zoo animals requires a little more patience. After all, you can’t wake up a lion! You may have to wait for a while until the animal does something interesting or moves into a position for you to get a good shot. When photographing zoo animals, don’t get too close to the cages, and never tap on the glass or throw things between the bars of a cage. Concentrate on shooting some good pictures, and always respect the animals you are photographing.
42. Why do some professional photographers NOT like to take pictures of pets?
(A) Pets don’t want to be bothered.
(B) Pets may not follow orders.
(C) Pets seldom change their expressions.
(D) Pets may not like photographers.
43. What is the use of a biscuit in taking pictures of a pet?
(A) To keep the pet from looking at the camera.
(B) To arouse the appetite of the pet.
(C) To create a special atmosphere.
(D) To capture a cute look.
44. What is the advantage of calling your pet’s name when taking a shot of it?
(A) To catch a different expression of your pet.
(B) To help your pet look its best.
(C) To make sure that your pet sits still.
(D) To keep your pet awake for a while.
45. In what way is photographing zoo animals different from photographing pets?
(A) You need special equipment.
(B) You need to stay close to the animals.
(C) You need to have fast film.
(D) You need more time to watch and wait.
