PACKAGE TOUR AND HOTEL OCCUPANCY RATE

VISITORS IN PACKAGE TOUR BY COUNTRY OF RESIDENCE

In May 1999, the number of visitor arrivals in package tour through the arrangement of travel agencies was 94,448, which represented an increase of 35.3%, compared with the same month of 1998. The People's Republic of China (53,697), Taiwan (25,029), and Japan (6,015) were the most important markets which accounted for 89.7% of visitors in package tour.

In the first five months of this year, the accumulative number of visitor arrivals in package tour was 428,242, with an increase of 16.8% compared with the same period of 1998.

OVERSEAS TRAVEL OF MACAU RESIDENTS IN PACKAGE TOUR

In this month, the total number of Macau residents who travelled overseas in package tour was 6,954, represented an increase of 10.2% over the same month of 1998. The People's Republic of China (63.8%), Taiwan (9.2%), and Thailand (7.1%) were the more popular destinations for residents of Macau. In the first five months of 1999, the number of Macau residents travelling abroad in package tour went up 16.0% over the same period of last year.

HOTELS AND SIMILAR ESTABLISHMENTS

The total number of rooms available in hotels and similar establishments was 8,963 in May, represented a decrease of 0.9% when compared with the same month of 1998. The average occupancy rate increased by 3.7 percentage points, at 50.8%. The average length of stay of overnight guests was 1.35 nights, a decrease of 0.04 night over the same month of last year. The major markets of this sector were Hong Kong (40.7%), the People's Republic of China (38.0%), and Taiwan (10.5%).

In the first five months of 1999, there were 912,800 overnight guests checked into hotels and similar establishments of Macau which represented a decrease of 0.3% over the same period of 1998.
