【A】Taiwan’s Tree King

Lai, Bei-Yuan is known as Taiwan’s Tree King. Over thirty years ago he left his family’s successful shipping business and began buying large areas of land in the mountains of Dasyueshan in Taichung. And on this land he planted trees—over a quarter of 1,000,000 of them!

But what made Lai decide to spend over NT$2,000,000,000 buying land to plant trees? Lai says that the customers he used to serve as part of his day job were all in business that polluted the earth. He felt he needed to do something to restore the earth’s life energy.

The trees Lai plants are all types that can grow for 1000 years or more! They help hold the soil together and keep the water flowing through the earth.

Some of these trees produce very expensive wood. But Lai has a policy of not allowing anyone to cut down his trees, even though he can make a pot of money from it.

【B】EMP Museum

I’ve visited many different museums for my arts column, but none of them was more fun than EMP in downtown Seattle. For one thing, there’s the building’s unique exterior. How could someone not love the look? There’s a train track running through the middle of the building. It looks like a train station on the moon!

It’s not only the exterior that stands out, but also the exhibits inside. They help to make the EMP Museum truly one of a kind. Most museums focus on the past, but EMP looks at the present. Exhibits cover different aspects of popular culture like music, movies, sports, and even video games. My favorite exhibit was Seattle Seahawks and the Road to Victory. It really gave me a behind-the-scenes look at Seattle’s football team.

Perhaps the EMP Museum is so unique because of the colorful people behind it. It was founded by Microsoft’s Paul Allen in 2000, and designed by Frank Gehry, a famous Canadian architect. Just visit EMP and you’ll see that their hard work has really paid off.

【C】London Supermarket Fights to Save The Planet

A UK supermarket is making shopping greener. Thornton’s Budgens in London has made the

country’s first plastic-free space. In just ten weeks, the store stopped using plastic packaging in over 1700 products. Now, they use things like paper or glass to pack food. These are better for the planet.

Owner Andrew Thornton says the change is important. Most plastic packaging can’t be recycled, so it is often thrown into the sea. There, it kills many sea animals and poison the water. Once, Thronton cut his foot at the beach. The water was so polluted that he got a serious infection. In the end, he had to go to the hospital. “That’s my story,” he said. “We can’t keep throwing our trash in the sea.”

【D】Bullies Can’t Hide from Instagram’s New AI

With over a billion users, Instagram is one of the most popular apps in the world. Sadly, some people on Instagram use it to bully others with cruel words and pictures. Instagram now is using artificial intelligence (AI) software to deal with this problem. The AI searches out and flags mean posts on its platform.

Instagram already has a feature that blocks bullying in the text under photos. The new AI looks at photos alone for mean words and offensive pictures, like photos that compare a person to something ugly.

It then sends these posts to a human worker. The worker can choose to approve or reject them.

Instagram users can also help stop bullying. They can use the new feature in the settings to hide offensive comments. Instagram hope these new features will make the app a friendlier place.

In January, millions of worried Brazilians that wanted the vaccine lined up for hours outside hospitals.
