VISITOR ARRIVALS

Visitors gradually return to Macao as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is brought under control. The year-on-year drop in visitor arrivals narrowed markedly from May to 5.4%

in June when total arrivals were recorded at 815,779. They came mainly from Hong Kong (48.4%), Mainland China (45.1%) and Taiwan (3.8%). Same-day visitors accounted for 47.9% of the total arrivals, at 390,943.

In the first half of 2003, there were 5,068,660 visitor arrivals, a decrease of 7.5% over the same period of 2002. Same-day visitors shared 46.6% of the total arrivals, with 2,360,455.

Compared with the first six months of 2002, the cumulative number of visitor arrivals by sea was 2,256,955 (-19.2%), in which 2,209,016 (-19.1%) arrived at the Outer Harbour. Arrivals by land totalled at 2,558,701 (+14.3%), among whom 2,461,502 (+15.0%) arrived through the Border Gate and 97,199 through the Checkpoint of CoTai. Arrivals by air reached 253,004 (-43.3%), of which 247,664 (-43.7%) arrived at the Macao International Airport.
