(A) Even the busiest people work short periods of relaxation into their schedule. They do so because they know it’s necessary in order to avoid burnout. Whether it’s exercise, a hot bath or favorite TV show, find an activity that recharges your batteries.

Unfortunately, not being able to relax causes some people to lose their most important rest:

sleep. If that’s you, sleep experts recommend keeping a “worry journal.” Write everything that’s on your mind in your journal before going to bed. Write down both problems and possible solutions.

This activity can help you release thoughts that might otherwise prevent you from getting needed sleep.

Finally, recognize your own limitations. You can’t do everything perfectly – but you can get the rest and relaxation you need to do many things better.

31. What does the sentence “that recharges your batteries” refer to?

(A) You can buy a new battery.

(B) You can’t generate power by yourself.

(C) A few restful hours can provide you with enough energy.

(D) You need to call the power plant.

32. According to the passage, why some people try keeping a “worry journal”?

(A) They want to recognize their own limitations.

(C) They need to release thoughts so that they can get enough sleep.

(D) They need to find the solution by writing.

(B) People love all kinds of nuts : peanuts, cashews, walnuts, pecans and more. Nuts can be enjoyed whole, in a recipe, or a spread on bread. But now there’s another reason to love nuts. It might sound “nuts,” but nuts may be your heart’s best friend.

For years, many people didn’t eat nuts because they contain a lot of fat. Almost 80 percent of a nut is fat. Studies done in the past 12 years, however, indicate that nuts lower one’s chance of heart disease. How? The fat found in nuts is good fat – the kind that reduces one’s bad cholesterol.

This bad cholesterol sticks to blood vessels and slowly builds up, increasing one’s chance of heart disease. Eating nuts can prevent this from happening.

In addition to the heart – healthy fat, other nutrients in nuts also make one’s heart and blood vessels stronger. And to top it off, nuts may reduce one’s risk of getting diabetes and some forms of cancer. All these benefits prove a healthier you may only be a few nuts away!

33. When someone is said to be ”nuts,” it means that .

(A) he is stupid (B) he is cute

(C) he is crazy (D) he is forgetful

(4)

34. Why people love nuts?

(A) Nuts may reduce one’s risk of getting diabetes.

(B) Nuts may be enjoyed in many ways.

(C) Nuts can lower one’s chance of heart disease.

(D) All the above mentioned are good reasons.

(C) In the United States and Europe, animals are no longer just possessions. They have rights of their own as well as their own lawyers to be sure they get their rights. We now can see courts take a broader view that animals are not like televisions and computers. Our relationship with them is more complex than that. Many pet owners believe that pets have great value because of the loving

friendship between pet, or “companion animal,” and owner. Consequently, more and more people are hiring lawyers to protect their pet’s interests.

Pet lawyers handle a variety of legal cases that involve a dog. Some pet owners want to set up a pet trust where money is placed into an account for their pet. Then when the owner passes away, the money from the trust pays to care for the pet as long as it lives. Trusts have been set up for dogs and cats and even birds and turtles. If a couple files for a divorce, they can hire a pet lawyer to help determine who gets the pet. And the pet’s preferences are considered. Other types of cases include dog bites, animal cruelty and unnecessary injury to an animal by a veterinarian.

People value their pets and want to look out for their pet’s interests. Hiring a pet lawyer can be expensive, but many pet owners feel it is worth it.

35. What does the word “trust” refer to in the second paragraph?

(A) A board on which some important information is offered.

(B) An account which is meant to help care for the pet.

(C) An account from which the pet owner can inherit money.

(D) A legal case that involves a dog.

36. Which of the following statement is “not” true?

(A) Nowadays, animals are no longer considered to be just possessions in the United States.

(B) More and more people hope their pets to be the inheritors.

(C) Pets’ interests are more and more valued in some developed countries.

(D) Many pet owners believe that pets have great value because they have particular market value.

(D)Since 1983, scientists have been able to develop strong plants more quickly by changing their genetic material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified foods, or GM foods. These GM foods, many people believe, are the best answer to feeding the world’s growing population. Some GM foods may have other advantages as well. They may also be able to help fight human diseases. A kind of rice is being developed, for example, which may be able to help some people from going blind.

GM plants are not perfect, however. Many people believe they are unnatural. Some even think they could harm us. In some experiment, genetic material from a snowdrop, a kind of flower, was added to a potato plant to help the plant fight disease. The potatoes were later fed to rats and the rats became ill. Did they become ill because of the GM food they eat? No one knows for sure. No one knows how good or bad these foods may be for human beings.

(5)

There is another problem with GM plants. They are not built to live through all kinds of changes. The weather and climate can change, for example. Sometimes, a whole crop of wheat may fail if the winter suddenly becomes very cold. New diseases can also occur, and farmers may lose all of their plants to such diseases.

Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them because they are unnatural. They may feed people, and then hurt them or their children later.

But both rich and poor countries are very interested in their use, and they are not going to go away.

In 2050 we may think differently about them.

37. How long have GM plants been developed in a more scientific way?

(A) 5 years (B) 17 years

(C) 26 years (D) hundreds of years

38. What does “There are strong feelings against them” mean in the last paragraph?

(A) Some people like GM foods very much.

(B) Some people do not like GM foods.

(C) GM foods cause people to have strong feelings towards food.

(D) GM foods are so strong that they can help people fight against many diseases.

39. Which of the following statements about GM food is true?

(A) We know for sure how good GM foods may be for human beings.

(B) Only poor countries are interested in GM foods.

(C) GM foods may feed people, and then hurt them or their children later.

(D) Making GM foods is the only way of feeding people in 2050.

40. According to the passage, what is NOT one of the problems with GM plants?

(A) They may not be able to live through all kinds of changes.

(B) Farmers may lose all of their plants because new diseases occur.

(C) Some people think they are unnatural and could even harm us.

(D) They may help cut the population growth.
