President's Address

Professor Tony F CHAN

Distinguished guests, graduates, parents, friends and colleagues,

On this important day, 1 would like first of all to offer my heartiest congratulations to our graduates.

About the same time last year, we gathered here to celebrate the accomplishments of a group of distinguished individuals. Among those who were honored with an honorary doctorate from HKUST was Jack Ma, the founder and chairman of Alibaba Group, who gave the 自rst commencement speech ever at HKUST. Since then, he has become a part of our extended family.

1 recently read an article about him and his three pieces of advice for his son. The first is to be optimistic in facing the future. The second is to think critically with a unique point of view. The third is to base one's opinions and decisions on facts.

This reminds me that 1 also gave my son three pieces of advice when he was little. 1 told him that he should do well in school, make lots of friends, and excel in at least one sport. Lately, 1 had a discussion with him (who is now in his 20's) and 1 am proud to say that he has succeeded on the first two counts, and is working on the third by improving his golf game.

4 I PRESI酬叫ORESSBY PROFESSOR T酬 FCHA

The thinking behind my advice was simple. Focusing on academics enables one to acquire useful skills and an inquisitive mindset that are in high demand in the knowledge-based society that we live in today.

Social interaction is crucial to a young person's development. Buddies from the classroom and playground will one day become fellow-travelers in our life journey. These are the people to whom we can turn for advice and encouragement in the future.

The last advice on sports comes in part from my long-standing interest in sports, but it is also my experience that sports not only benefit our health but also instill in us a sense of teamwork, develop our self-confidence and make us all the more well-rounded as a person.

All these three attributes are what HKUST cherishes and has taken great care to inculcate in you during your study here.

Now what about Jack Ma's three pieces of advice? They certainly resonate with me, based on my own personallife experience.

First, be optimistic in facing the future. We are faced with a future that appears at times to be less

(7)

than bright and glorious. Housing prices continue to rise and salaries seern to lag behind inflation, while the political disquiet that carne to surface in recent weeks has left rnany of us pessirnistic about the future. But do not lose heart. History has shown that hurnan ingenuity always cornes up with solutions to problerns that were once thought unsolvable. We did overcorne previous crisis such as SARS. Looking out over this crowd, 1 see great reasons for optirnisrn.

Second, think critically with a unique point of view. Clearly, J ack Ma is true to his own advice. When he visited the United States 20 years ago, he saw an opportunity in the power of the internet, prornpting hirn to start Alibaba when he returned to China. He was not alone in his foresight. 1, too, recognized the potential of the internet in the 1970s as a student at Stanford. Yet, while he chose to act on his intuition, all 1 did was to study cornputer science. What often separates a fully realized vision frorn a rnere hunch is a willingness to back up one's unique point of view by proactive hard work.

Third, base one's opinions and decisions on facts. The world is getting increasingly cornplex. Every day brings us news whose irnplications rnight be at odds with our values and experiences. At an age full of noises and other distractions, it is sornetirnes easier to follow the herd than to chart a course of one's own. People are often easily influenced uncritically by outside opinions. For an advanced econorny and dernocratic society to function properly, however, independent thinking is indispensable. It becomes all the rnore urgent

that we think critically and rnake our opinions and decisions truly ours by building them upon facts.

1 hope my sharing will serve you well in the future. On stage with rne today are five outstanding individuals who, in their own ways, exernplify what it rneans to lead a fulfilling life. Their accornplishrnents are no doubt sources of great inspiration to all of us. As you step out to the world, you will do well to heed their advice and personal exarnples. In so doing, you will build us a better world, and rnake us proud. Thank you.

Doctor of Engineering honoris cαusα

Professor

Cαhi血h Citation

From pioneering

smart skin" research for controlling turbulence on an aircraft's wings to phenotypic personalized medicine, Professor Chih-Ming Ho's interdisciplinary insights and innovative mindset have helped unleash a seemingly unstoppable flow of ideas and applied solutions. His journey of multiple discoveries has taken him across an array of science and engineering frontiers.

Following his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University, Professor Ho moved to Johns Hopkins University in the United States, where he earned a PhD in 1974 before heading into academia at the University of Southern California.

Focusing initially on experimental research of turbulent free shear layers made him a global front-runner in fluid meç;hanics by the 1990s. He moved across town and joined UCLA in 1991. Professor Ho has ventured forth into many emerging areas, pioneering advances in microfluidics, and biomolecular sensors. It is an amazing confluence of fields for a single academic, all traversed at world-leading levels.

In 1992, he became Founding Director of the Center for Microsystems at UCLA, leading it to become one of the world's top centers in the field. Later, while being the University's Associate Vice-Chancellor for Research, he

8 I 叫ORARY DEGREE 凹叫

formed the NASA開 funded Institute for Cell Mimetic Space Exploration, bringing together top faculty members and researchers in bio, nano and information technologies from several universities to explore 21st century technologies. He also served as a Director of the Center for Cell Control, supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Forging new discoveries across a spectrum of disciplines, Professor Ho has trained a generation of multi-talented students and postdoctoral researchers, drawn to his team by his remarkable passion for innovation but also his insightful mentoring of the next generation of engineering leadership. The charismatic master team builder has earned accolades from his students and early career faculty. Despite his frenetically busy schedule, Professor Ho's individual talks with his researchers, pinpointing their areas of strength and propelling them on to make the most of their capabilities, have been remembered with much appreciation down the years. He has mentored 50 PhD students. Half of them are now faculty members, including five holding chair professorships. Another half of his former students are industry leaders, including several high-level executives of multinational companies.

Among his most important discoveries is his development of powerful platforms to optimize combinatorial therapy for personalized medicine. Importantly, his approach is the first to be

(11)

able to truly personalize and optimize patient treatment efficacy and safety based on their unique phenotypic outcomes.

Such a system can be employed in multiple ways. At HKUST, where Professor Ho is a highly respected Visiting Professor at the HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study, he is now overseeing the use of the feedback system control (FSC) technique in ground-breaking studies on traditional Chinese medicine with School of Science and School of Engineering faculty rnernbers.

Professor Ho's far-reaching contributions have been widely recognized west and east. He is an elected academician of the US National Acaderny of Engineering and Acadernia Sinica. He is a Fellow of the Arnerican Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Arnerican Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Arnerican Physical Society. He is also a Science Advisor for many acadernic institutions in the world and holds 10 honorary professorships including the Einstein Professor of the Chinese Acaderny of Sciences. He has now chalked up 150 keynote speeches at international conferences. Professor Ho has been one of the 250 rnost cited researchers across engineering fields globally, according to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) index.

The results of the high irnportance he places on mentoring his team mernbers have been impressive: a burgeoning generation of top-class acadernics and start-up cornpanies working at the frontiers of technological innovation. He has rnanaged to be equally inspiring in his farnily life. He and his wife Shirley, who is active

in cornrnunity affairs, encouraged their only son, Dean, to enter acadernia where he is now a successful biornedical professor pioneering nanodiarnond solutions for drug delivery. Dean was also recently recruited to UCLA frorn Northwestern University.

Mr Acting Council Chairrnan, on behalf of the Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, I have the high honor of presenting to you Professor Chih-Ming Ho, Ben Rich - Lockheed Martin Chair Professor of the University of California at Los Angeles, for the award of Doctor of Engineering

honoris causa.

Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa

Dr Michael Hoi Hung MAK

Citation

From Dr Michael Hoi Hung Mak's childhood home in Sai Ying Pun to Central's medical hub of Tak Shing House may not seem far. However, the short distance he has moved geographically belies the light years he has traveled in life. The sole child of a grassroots family, Dr Mak's gateway to the wider world of opportunity was education. This in turn has become the area that the eminent pediatrician has championed down the decades, induding serving as Vice-Chairman of the Council at HKUST.

Dr Mak looks to his school days at St Paul's Co-educational College as the shaper of the boy who became the man and believes others should be able to enjoy a truly formative school and higher education experience.

Materially, his family background made him one of the least privileged in his dass at school. Yet he never felt this to be a barrier to achievement. Naturally gifted with an excellent memory, he took a prize-winning path from Primary One, ending his 13 years at the school as boys' head prefect alongside girls' head prefect Maria Wai Chu Tam. By the time he left to study medicine at the University of Hong Kong, perseverance, leadership skills, and an active contributing spirit were all firmly in place.

He made pediatrics his specialty rather than the more glamorous field of surgery following

12 I 間岫納:YDEG旺CrTA1lONS

his surgical houseman days at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. While there, a child suddenly passed away and the sadness over why this young life had so abruptly been halted became an enduring wish to try to stop this happening again.

In addition to professional capability and an ethical approach, a doctor, he believes, must possess a compassionate heart.

The belief in giving back developed at school and university, and through his own reading of Chinese history and literature, inspired Dr Mak to continuously work hard and seek improvement in order to serve his patients and the community more effectively.

In recognition of his academic endeavors, in 1991 he was elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians and in 1993, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. In addition, he sought to advance the medical profession as a whole, serving as a Council Member of the Hong Kong Medical Association and Vice-President of the Federation of Medical Societies of Hong Kong.

The education sector then became another beneficiary of his energy to drive change. As Supervisor of St Paul's Co-educational College from 1999 to 2010, he initiated and actively oversaw the school's conversion to the Direct Subsidy Scheme in 2002. In doing so, he helped to

(15)

set a new direction for traditional schools in Hong Kong, many of which subsequently joined the DSS system. He was also instrumental in launching a multi-million dollar fundraising campaign to support scholarships and subsidies at the school to enable students from all backgrounds to keep attending.

As Council Vice-Chairman of HKUST from 2008 to 2013, Dr Mak showed great commitment and genuine interest in supporting the University's advancement, working closely with the Council Chairman to facilitate development of the leadership structure and framework for strategic planning. He was supportive of the aspirations of students, faculty, and staff, dedicating time to establishing dialogue to better understand their needs and listen to feedback. With his strong belief in the importance of self-responsibility and altruism, he also became a patron of HKUST's REDbird Award Program that fosters character development and leadership in students. On joining the University Grants Committee in 2013, he stepped down from the Council to become a Court member.

Despite the thousands of hours he has devoted to public service, Dr Mak has remained first and foremost a family man, who talks with affection, delight and pride about his wife and children, all three of whom are also St Paul's alumni.

In 2005, Dr Mak was made a Justice of the Peace and, in 2013, his contribution to education and the community was recognized when he was awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR government. And with a guiding philosophy of

never say 'best' only 'better"', it seems clear

he will continue to strive to keep Hong Kong progressing and serve as an excellent role model for developing the heart of a community.

Mr Acting Council Chairman, on behalf of the Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, 1 have the high honor of presenting to you

Sir Michael MORITZ

Citation

If you are ever fortunate enough to present a start-up idea to Sir Michael Mori眩, don't use jargon such as

synergy",“out-of-the-box" and other business dich臼. Do be prepared to explain why your enterprise and determination to succeed can advance lives - and mean what you say.

As Chairman of Sequoia Capital, a firm cited by The Wall Street Joumal as

“one of Silicon Valley's most

influential venture-capital firms" and recognized globally as one of the most successful firms in its field, Sir Michael is looking for

“dentmakers", the

creative, resilient and independent thinkers who mean business but not at the expense of others. It's not only about how much you make, but how you make it and what you do with it that counts in the Moritz investment universe.

Personally, he has also made outstanding contributions to reducing the world's wealth gap. In 2012, Sir Michael and his wife, novelist Harriet Heyman, were named the 13th most generous philanthropists in the United States by The Chronicle of Philanthropy news organization. The couple have also signed The Giving Pledge, set up by global business-philanthropists Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to draw the very rich into donating at least half of their wealth and at Oxford University have created the largest scholarship scheme for undergraduate students in Europe. They have done similarly in the United States with the creation of the largest scholarship program for postgraduate scientists at the University of California.

16 I 州附YDEG旺啊鵬

A venture catalyst shaping and powering the global hi-tech ecosystem for more than 25 years, Sequoia Capital, where Sir Michael works is noted for its ability to identify “the next big thing". Since joining Sequoia in 1986, the firm's visionary investments have ranged from Google, YouTube and Yahoo! to Zappos, WhatsApp, DropBox and Airbnb. He also currently contributes as a board member to a host of e-dynamos, induding Linkedln, Green Dot and KAYAK. More importantly, under Sir Michael's leadership, Sequoia has evolved with the world of technology and established its own thriving investment businesses in China, India and Israel. In addition Sequoia has started and built much admired long-term asset management and public market funds.

1月Tithout Sequoia, the hi-tech revolution - led by companies such as Google, with its “Don't Be Evil" guiding philosophy - might appear very different, and so would the US economy. According to start-up data tracker Crunchbase the firm has made more than 750 investments in over 470 companies. It has achieved 37 IPOs and seen almost 80 firms acquired. The company's own website notes that Sequoia-funded companies represeht more than 20 % of the NASDAQ stock exchange. Sir Michael was NO.1 on the Forbes “Midas List" of top hi-tech deal-makers in 2006 and 2007.

Born in South Wales, Sir Michael received a degree in history from Oxford University. At the outset of his career, he worked for TIME magazine, where

(19)

he first saw the potential of what was happening in Silicon Valley, and wrote an early and acclaimed book on tech powerhouse Apple.

J oining Sequoia proved a perfect match. It offered a way to p叫 histechnology foresight into practical action through incubating and mentoring young businesses. At the same time, the company's outlook that money rnade rnust be usefully set to work fitted his own. Along with the pioneers of the e-future, education institutions, medical researchers, orphanages and many other causes around the world have benefited frorn the socially-oriented spirit and investrnent of Sir Michael and Sequoia partners.

Sir Michael's achievernents in business and giving were recognized in 2013 when he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Ernpire. The same year, he received an Honorary Doctorate frorn Juilliard School in New York. He has received Welsh accolades, receiving Honorary Fellowships frorn Cardiff University in 2010 and Aberγstwyth University earlier this year. Recognition is also due for his deterrnination to keep sharing his knowledge despite the diagnosis of a rare and incurable heath condition several years ago.

As HKUST sets out to rnake entrepreneurship one of its strategic areas for developrnent and to power a hi-tech start-up hub in Hong Kong and the region, Sir Michael has added both his expertise and socially aware vision to the endeavor. He has lectured at the HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study and spent tirne in discussion with the University's innovators and future business initiators. In doing so, his remarkable rnerging

Doctor of Science honoris causa

Professor 孔1u

Ming POO

Citation

Have you ever had one of those days when your rnernory seerns to be playing tricks on you such as recognizing a tune but being unable to recall its narne? One day, the work of Professor Mu Ming Poo rnay answer such rnysteries of the rnind.

Based at the University of California, Berkeley since 2000, this distinguished neurobiologist has long been engaged in exploring problerns of brain developrnent and learning and rnernory. Given the plasticity of the brain - rneaning its circuitry changes in response to the environrnent - what kind of signal would drive the circuitry to change? The prize at the end of this forrnidable venture into the unknown is unraveling the basic rnechanisrns of how we learn and rernernber, and enhancing knowledge of brain diseases.

In the 1990s, to assist this quest, Professor Poo defined a breakthrough research rnethod that could systernatically chart how neuronal connections are forrned while also being able to rnanipulate chernical and environrnental factors to observe how these connections then change.

This achievernent and his work over the past four decades have brought hirn recognition worldwide. He is a rnernber of the US National Acaderny of Sciences, Acadernia Sini凹, and the Arnerican Association for the Advancernent of Science. His nurnerous awards include the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award of the National Institutes of Health, the Arneritec Prize, and the

20 I HONORARY 注GREEcrrATlONS

People's Republic of China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. He has also received a Docteur honoris causa frorn École Norrnale Sup世ieure,Paris.

Born in Na吋ing in Mainland China and raised in Taiwan, Professor Poo gained a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics frorn Tsinghua University in Taiwan in 1970 and a PhD in Biophysics frorn Johns Hopkins University in the United States in 1974, where he rnoved across to neurobiology. He went on to work at Purdue, University of California at Irvine, Yale, Colurnbia, and University of California at San Diego before settling at Berkeley at the start of the new rnillenniurn.

Professor Poo's experirnental contributions to science are only one part of his great legacy. He has been equally significant in training the next generation of neuroscientists. Setting standards way above average, he has sought and drawn the very best graduate students to focus on the challenges of the brain. This is not only the case in the United States. Professor Poo has also played a crucial role in the developrnent of neuroscience in China. Specifically, he has sought to establish a research culture based on critical thinking with a strong ernphasis on excellence. As Director of the Institute of Neuroscience of the Chinese Acaderny of Sciences in Shanghai, his tireless efforts have been irnrnensely successful as the Institute is now firrnly on the global rnap due to the first-rate quality of its research.

(23)

Once again this has meant adherence to stringen吐y

high standards. It appears to have worked. Where previously China's best science students went overseas and stayed there, now many of them choose to stay in Shanghai, or come home from abroad to work at the Institute.

Tackling the two jobs simultaneously has required inexhaustible energy, which fortunately he seems to possess. He works hard, rarely takes weekends off, demanding more from himself than even the terrific heights he sets for others. His curriculum vitae lists more than 200 published papers.

Every month since 1999, Professor Poo has made the long journey from west to east to spend a week in Shanghai. On the way, he has often visited HKUST, where he has been involved with the University since its earliest days. He sat on the Preparatory Committee when HKUST was first being established, .and has continued to keep in touch with developments, helping to shape the direction of the University's life science program into the best in Hong Kong. He has assisted enormously in developing connections with leading researchers in the Unite再 States, building ties with the Institute of Neuroscience, and setting up the State Key Lab in Molecular Neuroscience at HKUST.

While his tough-guy reputation in the lab sometimes overshadows the fact he has a good sense of humor, his entertaining conversation soon puts paid to the idea that scientists are boring. Still fired by the passion for science, Professor Poo provides a wonderful example of how fascinating a life of discovery can be even after 40 years of non-stop endeavors at the most elevated levels.

Mr Acting Council Chairman, on behalf of the Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, 1 have the high honor of presenting to you

Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa

Professor Yu XIE

Citation

Family li起, marriage, social standing and cultural

behavior form the basic fabric of every one of our lives. Yet how can we understand these phenomena in order to make the best decisions regarding both individual life courses and public policies? And how can we collect the solid evidence to inform our choices? To these globally significant issues, Professor Yu Xie, a pioneering sociologist at the University of Michigan, has devoted his life. The answers he has arrived at have created new perspectives and quantitative methods with which to study the

world of

reality九 ashe has termed it.

Demonstrating the wide applicability of his work, Professor Xie has published on intercultural friendship, income inequality, educational expectations and attainment, intergenerational social mobility, marriage and cohabitation, and the immigrant experience in the United States, among other important and often sensitive subjects. A 2003 co-written book,

Women in Science

,

became a worldwide talking point after it was controversially interpreted at a conference in 2005 by then Harvard President Lawrence Summers.

Professor Xie's own life story is a notable case study in charting the impact of social change on individuals. Born in Jiangsu, he grew up during the Cultural Revolution. After being sent down to the countryside with his parents, his education was largely put on hold. But the experience lit the

24 I 酬。酬 YDEGREE crrAllONS

flame of curiosity about the workings of society and its impact on people, a passion that continues to drive him onward today.

Unusually for a sociologist, he graduated in 1982 from Shanghai University of Technology with a degree in metallurgical engineering. This was in line with the demand for technical expertise in China as the country pursued its

open-door" policy of economic development. However, the nuts and bolts of society were where Professor Xie's heart lay, and when he was selected for graduate studies overseas, he chose history of science as well as sociology as his new direction in the United States. He ended up with two master's degrees and a PhD, all from the University of Wisconsin -Madison.

After completing his doctoral studies in 1989, the young academic moved to the University of Michigan. There he developed his multidisciplinary outlook to advance social research methods, exploring the differences between social science and natural science. As all individuals differ both inherently and responding their environments, human beings cannot be properly understood through the

typological" thinking that characterizes natural science. Instead, Professor Xie has distilled the type of

“population thinking"

that he favors into three basic principles of social science research: variability, social groupings, and social context.

(27)

As Director of the Quantitative Methodology Program at Michigan's Survey Research Center, he has undertaken rigorous, evidence-based studies that apply these three principles, leading to the development of discrete choice models for friendship choice and causal inference based on observational data, while his log-multiplicative layer effect model has proved particularly valuable for comparative tabular analysis.

Attesting to the significance of his work, he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academia Sinica and, an unusual accolade for a sociologist, the US National Academy of Sciences.

In the past decade, Professor Xie has striven to satisfy the need in today's China for higher quality data on the immense social changes of recent times. Working closely with Peking University as the Principal Investigator of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), he has been deeply involved in building the infrastructure for social science research, designing and overseeing a ground-breaking national study. The study, launched in 2010, follows nearly 泊, 000 households and

more than 42,000 individuals each year to track areas such as migration, health and family life and provide the data vital for policy decisions and future research.

Professor Xie is also doing his part to foster the new generation of social scientists in the US, China, and at HKUST, where he is an Adjunct Professor in the Division of Social Science. A kind and patient teacher, he constantly seeks to share his enthusiasm, expertise and far-reaching network with the students he supervises. In

another significant venture for HKUST and Hong Kong, he is working with the University's researchers on a similar household panel study in Hong Kong, a project that can generate solid data for social science and public policy research on education, healthcare, and employment among other essential areas of our community.

Mr Acting Council Chairman, on behalf of the Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, 1 have the high honor of presenting to you, Professor Yu Xie, Otis Dudley Duncan Distinguished University Professor of Sociology, Statistics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan for the award of Doctor of Social Sciences
