Merchandise export and import amounted to MOP1.08 billion and MOP4.22 billion in March, down by 9.0% and 40.1% respectively year-on-year.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP3.14 billion.

In the first quarter of 2020, merchandise export fell by 13.7% year-on-year, of which re-exports decreased by 16.0% but domestic exports increased by 9.6%; meanwhile, merchandise import declined by 22.9%. External merchandise trade dropped by 21.6% year-on-year to MOP19.64 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP13.36 billion, a decrease of MOP4.41 billion from MOP17.77 billion a year earlier.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to mainland China (MOP386 million) and Hong Kong (MOP2.21 billion) dropped by 6.9% and 14.4%

respectively year-on-year in the first quarter of 2020, while exports to the USA (MOP107 million) surged by 118.6%. By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP5.70 billion), the EU (MOP4.73 billion) and Switzerland (MOP1.08 billion) decreased by 22.3%, 19.0% and 38.3%

respectively year-on-year.
