In September 2020, merchandise export amounted to MOP928 million, down by 9.1% year-on-year; merchandise import expanded by 42.4% to MOP10.65 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP9.72 billion.

From January to September 2020, merchandise export fell by 16.2% year-on-year, of which re-exports declined by 19.1% but domestic exports rose by 6.9%; meanwhile, merchandise import went down by 12.4%. External merchandise trade dropped by 12.9% year-on-year to MOP63.87 billion.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP48.12 billion, a decrease of MOP6.40 billion from MOP54.52 billion a year earlier.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP5.37 billion) decreased by 11.4% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2020, while exports to mainland China (MOP1.23 billion) and the USA (MOP417 million) expanded by 3.7% and 130.5% respectively. By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP18.03 billion) and the EU (MOP15.41 billion) declined by 16.5% and 11.4% respectively year-on-year, while imports from Japan (MOP5.83 billion) grew by 36.0%.

In the third quarter, merchandise export (MOP2.89 billion) fell by 3.4% year-on-year while merchandise import (MOP26.55 billion) rose by 20.7%, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP23.66 billion.
