Merchandise export and import amounted to MOP687 million and MOP4.35 billion in May, down by 24.2% and 39.1% respectively year-on-year.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP3.66 billion.

In the first five months of 2020, merchandise export fell by 17.3% year-on-year, of which re-exports decreased by 19.5% but domestic exports increased by 1.6%; meanwhile, merchandise import declined by 30.3%. External merchandise trade dropped by 28.6% year-on-year to MOP29.20 billion.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP20.11 billion, a decrease of MOP9.79 billion from MOP29.90 billion a year earlier.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP2.99 billion) decreased by 19.5% year-on-year in the first five months of 2020, while exports to mainland China (MOP808 million) and the USA (MOP169 million) expanded by 21.5% and 111.4% respectively. By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP9.13 billion), the EU (MOP6.55 billion) and Switzerland (MOP1.37 billion) dropped by 23.4%, 32.1% and 52.7% respectively year-on-year.
