Merchandise export and import amounted to MOP716 million and MOP3.84 billion in April, down by 24.8% and 44.1% respectively year-on-year.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP3.12 billion.

In the first four months of 2020, merchandise export fell by 16.0% year-on-year, of which re-exports decreased by 17.9% but domestic exports increased by 2.3%; meanwhile, merchandise import declined by 28.1%. External merchandise trade dropped by 26.4% year-on-year to MOP24.18 billion.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP16.47 billion, a decrease of MOP7.21 billion from MOP23.68 billion a year earlier.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to mainland China (MOP601 million) and the USA (MOP125 million) expanded by 12.1% and 102.7%

respectively year-on-year in the first four months of 2020, while exports to Hong Kong (MOP2.63 billion) decreased by 17.3%. By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP7.27 billion), the EU (MOP5.54 billion) and Switzerland (MOP1.25 billion) dropped by 24.7%, 27.4% and 45.2% respectively year-on-year.
