EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS
JANUARY/2003 No. 1
In January 2003, total export value of Macao amounted to MOP 1.78 billion, up 21.7% over a year earlier. Among this, value of domestic exports increased by 27.7% to MOP 1.51 billion, while that of re-exports decreased by 4.4% to MOP 263 million. Concurrently, import value amounted to MOP 1.64 billion, up 4.0% over a year earlier.

In January 2003, the trade balance of Macao stood at a surplus of nearly MOP 137 million. At the same time, the exports/imports ratio increased from 92.6% a year earlier to 108.3% in January 2003.
In January 2003, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 82.8% of the total export value, increased by 24.0% over a year earlier. On the other hand, the value of Non-textile also went up by 11.8%. The major components of non-textile, namely Machines and apparatus, parts &
accessories thereof and Footwear registered an increase of 23.5% each.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, adding up to contribute to 78.7% to the total export value. Among this, exports to the USA, which took up 52.8% of the total export value, increased by 39.9% over a year earlier. At the same time, exports to the EU, which took up 25.9%, increased by 15.6%. Turning to the Asian markets, Mainland China and Hong Kong added up to absorb 13.8% of the total export value. Comparing with same period of 2002, the value of exports to Mainland China decreased by 18.5%, while that to Hong Kong recorded an increase of 3.0%.

In January 2003, Macao’s import value increased by 4.0% over a year earlier. Analysis by broad economic category showed that increases were registered for Consumer goods (+14.2%) and Fuels &
lubricants (+1.1%). On the contrary, decreases in Capital goods and Raw materials &
semi-manufactures were recorded at 4.5% and 2.9% respectively.

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods still concentrated in the Asian region.
Among them, Mainland China and Hong Kong occupied 50.2% of the total import value. Comparing with the same period of 2002, the value of imports from Mainland China increased by 3.1%, whereas that from Hong Kong decreased by 7.1%. On the other hand, increases were registered in the values of imports from both the EU (+4.4%) and the USA (+17.1%); they accounted for 16.4% and 4.3% of the total import value respectively.
