EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS

OCTOBER/2003 No. 10

In October 2003, total export value of Macao amounted to MOP1.63 billion, up 1.8% over a year earlier. Among this, value of domestic exports increased by 0.4% to MOP1.25 billion, while that of re-exports also increased by 6.7% to MOP376 million. Concurrently, import value amounted to MOP1.94 billion, up 17.3% over a year earlier. Combining exports and imports, a trade deficit of MOP308 million was recorded.

For the first ten months of 2003, the value of total exports showed a year-on-year increase of 8.5%

to MOP16.88 billion. Among this, the value of domestic exports increased by 9.3%, whereas the value of re-exports also rose by 5.9%. Meanwhile, the value of imports amounted to MOP17.99 billion, up 7.2%

over a year earlier.

During the first ten months of 2003, the trade balance of Macao stood at a deficit of MOP1.11 billion. During the same period, the exports/imports ratio increased from 92.7% in the corresponding period of 2002 to 93.8% in 2003.

For the period of January to October 2003 inclusive, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 83.4% of the total export value, increased by 7.7% over a year earlier. Moreover, the value of Non-textile exports also went up by 13.0%. The major components of non-textile exports, namely Machines and apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Footwear recorded increases of 27.1%

and 8.1% respectively.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, making up 72.2% of the total export value. Among this, exports to the USA, which made up 49.8% of the total export value, increased by 11.7% over a year earlier. During the same period, exports to the EU, which made up 22.4% of the total export, increased by 6.8%. As to the Asian markets, Mainland China and Hong Kong together absorbed 20.9% of the total export value. Comparing with the corresponding period of 2002, the value of exports to Mainland China decreased by 4.2%, whereas that to Hong Kong rose by 22.6%.

For the period of January to October 2003 inclusive, Macao’s import value increased by 7.2% over a year earlier. Analysis by broad economic category indicates the increase was mainly due to value rises in Consumer goods (+13.0%), Fuels & lubricants (+12.2%), Capital goods (+3.6%) and Raw materials

& semi-manufactures (+3.0%).

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods still concentrated in the Asian region.

Mainland China and Hong Kong constituted 55.9% of the total import value. Comparing with the same period of 2002, the value of imports from Mainland China increased by 11.3%, whereas that from Hong Kong decreased by 8.2%. In addition, an increase was recorded in the value of imports from the EU (+11.7%), while a decrease was recorded in the imports from the USA (-5.9%). The EU and the USA accounted for 12.0% and 3.8% of the total import value respectively.
