EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS

FEBRUARY/2003 No. 2

In February 2003, total export value of Macao amounted to MOP784 million, less 12.9% over a year earlier. Among this, value of domestic exports decreased by 25.0% to MOP534 million, while that of re-exports increased by 33.1% to MOP250 million. Concurrently, import value amounted to MOP1.09 billion, up 18.2% over a year earlier. Taking exports and imports together, a trade deficit of MOP304 million was recorded.

For the period of January - February 2003, the value of total exports showed a year-on-year increase of 8.5% to MOP2.56 billion. Among this, the value of domestic exports increased by 7.9%, whereas the value of re-exports also rose by 10.8%. Meanwhile, the value of imports amounted to MOP2.73 billion, increased 9.2% over a year earlier.

During the first two months of 2003, the trade balance of Macao stood at a deficit of nearly MOP167 million. At the same time, the exports/imports ratio decreased from 94.5% a year earlier to 93.9% in corresponding period of 2003.

For the period of January - February 2003, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 79.5% of the total export value, increased by 6.9% over a year earlier. On the other hand, the value of Non-textile also went up by 15.1%. The major components of non-textile, namely Machines and apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Footwear registered increases of 41.8% and 3.5%

respectively.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, adding up to contribute to 73.0% of the total export value. Among this, exports to the USA, which took up 49.9% of the total export value, increased by 15.5% over a year earlier. At the same time, exports to the EU, which took up 23.1%, decreased by 1.9%. Turning to the Asian markets, Mainland China and Hong Kong added up to absorb 18.3% of the total export value. Comparing with same period of 2002, the value of exports to Mainland China decreased by 6.2%, while that to Hong Kong recorded an increase of 18.3%.

For the period of January - February 2003, Macao’s import value increased by 9.2% over a year earlier. Analysis by broad economic category showed that increases were registered for Fuels &

lubricants (+21.5%), Consumer goods (+17.0%) and Raw materials & semi-manufactures (6.5%).

On the contrary, decrease in Capital goods was recorded at 8.4%.

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods still concentrated in the Asian region.

Among them, Mainland China and Hong Kong occupied 50.6% of the total import value. Comparing with the same period of 2002, the values of imports from Mainland China and Hong Kong increased by 11.0% and 2.7% respectively. On the other hand, increases were registered in the values of imports from both the EU (+10.6%) and the USA (+12.3%); they accounted for 15.4% and 4.5% of the total import value respectively.
