EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS

AUGUST/2004 No. 8

In August 2004, Macao’s total export value amounted to MOP2.37 billion, up 21.3% over the same month of 2003. Among this, the value of domestic exports increased 19.2% to MOP1.93 billion, and the value of re-exports went up 31.8% to MOP439 million. Value of imports amounted to MOP2.45 billion, up 29.2% over the same period of 2003. A trade deficit of MOP81 million was recorded this month.

During the period of January - August 2004, the value of total exports recorded a year-on-year increase of 8.7% to MOP14.85 billion. Among this, the value of domestic exports went up 6.3% and the value of re-exports rose 17.7%. Meanwhile, the value of imports amounted to MOP17.87 billion, up 26.4% over the same period of 2003.

In the first eight months of 2004, Macao’s trade balance registered a deficit of MOP3.02 billion.

During this period, the exports/imports ratio decreased from 96.6% in the corresponding period of 2003 to 83.1%.

In the first eight months of 2004, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 80.4% of total exports, increased 4.4% over the same period of 2003. Moreover, the value of Non-textile exports also went up 31.1%. Major components of the non-textile exports, namely Machines and apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Footwear registered year-on-year increases of 85.7% and 25.2% respectively.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, together making up 70.4%

of the total export value. Among this, exports to the USA, which made up 48.3% of the total export value, increased 6.2% in value over the same period of 2003. Exports to the EU, which made up 22.1% of the total exports, increased 4.8% in value over the same period of 2003. As regards the Asian markets, the Mainland China and Hong Kong together absorbed 21.8% of Macao’s total export value. Compared with the corresponding period of 2003, the value of exports to the Mainland China and Hong Kong rose 4.6%

and 33.6% respectively.

During the period of January - August 2004, Macao’s total import value increased 26.4% over the same period of 2003. In terms of broad economic categories, increases were registered in Capital goods (+56.5%), Consumer goods (+31.4%), Fuels & lubricants (+24.5%) and Raw materials & semi- manufactures (+12.8%).

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods were still in the Asian region. Imports from the Mainland China and Hong Kong together constituted 54.9% of the total import value.

Compared with the same period of 2003, the value of imports from the Mainland China and Hong Kong rose 30.3% and 0.3% respectively. In addition, total value of imports from the EU and the USA went up 35.3% and 36.2% respectively compared with the same period of 2003. The EU and the USA accounted for 12.7% and 4.2% of the total import value respectively.
