EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS
DECEMBER/2003 No. 12
In December 2003, total export value of Macao amounted to MOP2.14 billion, up 18.2% over the same period of 2002. Among this, value of domestic exports increased by 19.8% to MOP1.79 billion and that of re-exports went up 10.7% to MOP357 million. Concurrently, import value amounted to MOP2.13 billion, up 21.3% over the same period of 2002. A trade surplus of MOP13 million was recorded in this month.
For the year 2003, the value of total exports showed a year-on-year increase of 9.4% to MOP20.70 billion. Among this, the value of domestic exports increased by 10.1% and that of re-exports rose 6.9%.
Meanwhile, the value of imports amounted to MOP22.10 billion, up 8.7% over the year 2002.

During the year 2003, the trade balance of Macao stood at a deficit of MOP1.40 billion. During the same period, the exports/imports ratio increased from 93.1% in 2002 to 93.7% in 2003.
Exports registered an increase of 9.1% and imports rose 16.3% in the fourth quarter of 2003 compared with the same period of 2002. The trade balance stood at a deficit of MOP622 million.
In 2003, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 83.1% of the total export value, increased by 8.3% over 2002. In addition, the value of Non-textile also went up 14.9%. The major components of non-textile, namely Machines and apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Footwear, registered increases of 34.8% and 11.7% respectively.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, making up 72.7% of the total export value. Among this, exports to the USA, which made up 49.9% of the total export value, increased by 12.8% over 2002. Exports to the EU, which made up 22.8% of total export value, increased by 7.5% over 2002. As to the Asian markets, the Mainland China and Hong Kong together absorbed 20.3% of the total export value. Compared with 2002, export value to the Mainland China dropped 3.5%, whereas that to Hong Kong rose 23.8%.

In 2003, Macao’s total import value increased by 8.7% over 2002. In terms of broad economic categories, increases were registered in Consumer goods (+13.6%), Capital goods (+12.1%), Fuels &
lubricants (+8.2%) and Raw materials & semi-manufactures (+3.7%).

Among the imports of Raw materials & semi-manufactures, value of textile materials (69.3%) decreased by 3.7% over 2002, while construction materials (6.1%) increased by 156.8%. In addition, materials and semi-manufactures for furskins, paper and plastics (4.0%) dropped by 3.1% over 2002.

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods still concentrated in the Asian region.
Among them, Mainland China and Hong Kong accounted for 55.5% of the total import value. Compared with 2002, import value from Mainland China increased by 11.9%, whereas that from Hong Kong decreased by 5.5%. Compared with 2002 increases were registered in import value from the EU (+10.4%) and from the USA (+3.5%); they accounted for 12.0% and 3.9% of the total import value respectively.
