EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS

JANUARY/2004 No. 1

In January 2004, Macao’s total export value amounted to MOP1.34 billion, down 24.9% over the same month of 2003. Among this, value of domestic exports decreased by 28.0% to MOP1.09 billion, and that of re-exports also went down by 6.8% to MOP248 million. Concurrently, import value amounted to MOP1.56 billion, down 4.5% over the same period of 2003.

In January 2004, Macao’s trade balance stood at a deficit of MOP227 million. During this period, the export/import ratio decreased from 108.7% a year earlier to 85.5% in January 2004.

In January 2004, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 77.8% of the total export value, decreased by 29.4% over the same period of 2003. Moreover, the value of Non-textile exports also went down by 3.1%. The major components of non-textile exports, namely Machines and apparatus, parts & accessories thereof registered an increase of 20.7%, whereas Footwear decreased by 2.1%.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, making up 73.7% of the total export value. Among this, exports to the USA, which made up 42.1% of the total export value, decreased by 40.0% over the same period of 2003. Exports to the EU, which made up 31.6% of the total export, decreased by 8.3% over the same period of 2003. As to the Asian markets, the Mainland China and Hong Kong together absorbed 16.3% of the total export value. Compared with the corresponding period of 2003, the value of exports to the Mainland China dropped by 23.7%, whereas that to Hong Kong rose by 12.5%.

In January 2004, Macao’s total import value decreased by 4.5%. Analysis by broad economic category indicates that the decrease was due to total value decline in Raw materials &

semi-manufactures (-12.9%) and Consumer goods (-7.2%). On the contrary, Capital goods and Fuels & lubricants were up by 17.9% and 11.5% respectively.

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods were still in the Asian region. The Mainland China and Hong Kong constituted 47.6% of the total import value. Compared with the same period of 2003, the value of imports from the Mainland China decreased by 5.5%, and that from Hong Kong also dropped by 20.2%. In addition, decreases registered in the total value of imports from the EU (-6.2%) as well as in the imports from the USA (-17.6%) compared with the same period of 2003. The EU and the USA accounted for 16.1% and 3.7% of the total import value respectively.
