EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS

APRIL/2003 No. 4

In April 2003, total export value of Macao amounted to MOP1.54 billion, up 15.5% over a year earlier. Among this, value of domestic exports increased by 21.9% to MOP1.14 billion, while that of re-exports increased by 0.6% to MOP403 million. Concurrently, import value amounted to MOP1.85 billion, up 7.6% over a year earlier. Taking exports and imports together, a trade deficit of MOP301 million was recorded.

For the period of January – April 2003, the value of total exports showed a year-on-year increase of 13.9% to MOP5.58 billion. Among this, the value of domestic exports increased by 14.6%, whereas the value of re-exports also rose by 11.7%. Meanwhile, the value of imports amounted to MOP6.34 billion, increased by 6.8% over a year earlier.

During the first four months of 2003, the trade balance of Macao stood at a deficit of nearly MOP760 million. At the same time, the exports/imports ratio increased from 82.5% a year earlier to 88.0% in corresponding period of 2003.

For the period of January – April 2003, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 80.7% of the total export value, increased by 14.5% over a year earlier. On the other hand, the value of Non-textile also went up by 11.5%. The major components of non-textile, namely Machines and apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Footwear registered increases of 10.5% and 9.3%

respectively.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, adding up to contribute to 69.4% of the total export value. Among this, exports to the USA, which took up 48.0% of the total export value, increased by 20.6% over a year earlier. At the same time, exports to the EU, which took up 21.4%, increased by 4.8%. Turning to the Asian markets, Mainland China and Hong Kong added up to absorb 22.7% of the total export value. Comparing with same period of 2002, the value of exports to Mainland China increased by 3.2%, while that to Hong Kong also rose by 20.2%.

For the period of January – April 2003, Macao’s import value increased by 6.8% over a year earlier. Analysis by broad economic category showed that increases were registered for Fuels &

lubricants (+20.9%), Consumer goods (+15.7%) and Raw materials & semi-manufactures (+6.8%).

On the contrary, a decrease in Capital goods was recorded at 19.1%.

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods still concentrated in the Asian region.

Among them, Mainland China and Hong Kong occupied 54.7% of the total import value. Comparing with the same period of 2002, the values of imports from Mainland China and Hong Kong increased by 11.7% and 1.9% respectively. On the other hand, an increase was registered in the value of imports from the EU (+10.8%), while a decrease was recorded from the USA (-6.0%); they accounted for 13.2% and 4.4% of the total import value respectively.
