EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS

SEPTEMBER/2003 No. 9

In September 2003, total export value of Macao amounted to MOP1.63 billion, up 7.9% over a year earlier. Among this, value of domestic exports increased by 5.4% to MOP1.24 billion, while that of re-exports increased by 17.2% to MOP383 million. Concurrently, import value amounted to MOP1.92 billion, up 16.4% over a year earlier. Taking exports and imports together, a trade deficit of MOP294 million was recorded.

For the period of January - September 2003, the value of total exports showed a year-on-year increase of 9.2% to MOP15.25 billion. Among this, the value of domestic exports increased by 10.2%, whereas the value of re-exports rose by 5.8%. Meanwhile, the value of imports amounted to MOP16.06 billion, increased by 6.1% over a year earlier.

During the first nine months of 2003, the trade balance of Macao stood at a deficit of MOP810 million. At the same time, the exports/imports ratio increased from 92.3% a year earlier to 95.0% in the corresponding period of 2003.

In the third quarter of 2003, the exports registered an increase of 6.9%, while the imports rose by 8.5% comparing with the same period of 2002. The trade balance stood at a deficit of MOP6.6 million.

For the period of January - September 2003, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 83.5% of the total export value, increased by 8.7% over a year earlier. On the other hand, the value of Non-textile also went up by 12.2%. The major components of non-textile, namely Machines and apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Footwear registered increases of 27.6% and 6.5%

respectively.

The USA and the EU remained as Macao’s two largest export markets, adding up to contribute to 72.4% of the total export value. Among this, exports to the USA, which took up 50.0% of the total export value, increased by 13.5% over a year earlier. At the same time, exports to the EU, which took up 22.4%, increased by 6.2%. Turning to the Asian markets, Mainland China and Hong Kong together absorbed 20.7% of the total export value. Comparing with same period of 2002, the value of exports to Mainland China decreased by 4.3%, while that to Hong Kong recorded an increase of 22.9%.

For the period of January - September 2003, Macao’s import value increased by 6.1% over a year earlier. Analysis by broad economic category showed that increases were registered for Consumer goods (+12.1%), Fuels & lubricants (+9.7%), Raw materials & semi-manufactures (+2.6%) and Capital goods (0.5%).

Among the imports of Raw materials & semi-manufactures, value of textile materials (70.6%) decreased by 3.8% over a year earlier, while construction materials (5.4%) increased by 154.2%. In addition, materials and semi-manufactures for furskins, paper and plastics (3.9%) dropped by 5.2%.

Meanwhile, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods still concentrated in the Asian region.

Among them, Mainland China and Hong Kong occupied 55.9% of the total import value. Comparing with the same period of 2002, the values of imports from Mainland China increased by 10.8%, whereas that from Hong Kong decreased by 8.6% . On the other hand, an increase was registered in the value of imports from the EU (+10.0%), while a decrease was recorded from the USA (

9.2%); they accounted for 12.1% and 3.8% of the total import value respectively.
