The business performance of restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade weakened in February. There were 33% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments reporting a year-on-year decline in receipts in February, up by 12 percentage points from January. Meanwhile, 34% of the interviewed establishments registered a year-on-year rise in receipts, a decrease of 14 percentage points from January.
The interviewed restaurants & similar establishments expected their business to slacken further in March, with 55% of them anticipating their receipts to remain stable year-on-year and 30% forecasting a decrease in receipts, up by 5 percentage points and 4 percentage points from February respectively.
Retailers were still cautious about their business prospects in March, with 64% of them anticipating their sales to increase year-on-year or remain steady, down slightly by 1 percentage point from February. On the other hand, 36% of the interviewed retailers forecasted a year-on-year sales decrease.

17.2 As regards retail trade, the proportion of interviewed retailers recording a year-on-year sales decrease in February surged by 32 percentage points from January to 69%, on account of the buoyant sales in January prior to the Lunar New Year in early February of this year, and a higher base of comparison resulting from the Lunar New Year that fell in mid-February last year. On the other hand, only 18% of the interviewed retailers showed a year-on-year sales increase in February, a 30 percentage point drop from January.
Among the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments, 34%
registered a year-on-year rise in receipts in February, higher than expected by 10 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Western Restaurants (58%) and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (37%) exceeded the forecast by 33 percentage points and 18 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, 33% of the interviewed establishments recorded a year-on-year decrease in receipts, 7 percentage points higher than the forecast (Table 2).

growth in receipts or stable performance, a decrease of 6 percentage points from January, while the corresponding proportion of Japanese &
Korean Restaurants (78%) grew by 6 percentage points. Meanwhile, the proportions of Chinese Restaurants (43%) and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (35%) reporting a year-on-year decline in receipts increased by 20 percentage points and 12 percentage points respectively from January (Table 1).

As regards retail trade, the proportion of interviewed retailers reporting a year-on-year sales drop in February increased compared to January. There were 80% or more of the Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers, Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers and Adults’ Clothing Retailers recording a year-on-year sales decrease in February, an expansion of 50 percentage points, 39 percentage points and 35 percentage points respectively (Table 4).

Among the interviewed retailers, 18% registered a year-on-year sales rise in February, lower than expected by 5 percentage points. The corresponding proportion of Leather Goods Retailers (60%) was lower than the forecast by 20 percentage points. None of the interviewed Motor Vehicle Retailers predicted a year-on-year growth in receipts in February, yet it turned out that 20% of them registered increase. Meanwhile, 69%
of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales decrease in February, 34 percentage points higher than predicted. The corresponding proportions of Adults' Clothing Retailers (85%), Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (80%) and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (83%) exceeded the forecast significantly by 55 percentage points, 40 percentage points and 39 percentage points respectively (Table 5).
4.3 On the other hand, the proportions of Local Style Cafes, Congee &
Noodle Shops (39%), Western Restaurants (32%) and Chinese Restaurants (30%) predicting a year-on-year decline in receipts in March, each increased by 7 percentage points from February (Table 3).

Meanwhile, 60% of the Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers predicted a year-on-year sales decrease in March, a growth of 20 percentage points compared to February, while the corresponding share of the Motor Vehicle Retailers (60%) fell by 20 percentage points (Table 6).
There were 91% of the Department Stores anticipating their sales to increase year-on-year or remain steady in March, up by 18 percentage points from February, while the corresponding proportion of Leather Goods Retailers (80%) dropped by 20 percentage points.

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, comprising 186 restaurants & similar establishments (accounting for 53% of the industry’s receipts) and 136 retailers (accounting for 70% of the industry’s receipts) after rotating some of the samples. The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
