There were 80% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments expecting their receipts to decline year-on-year in September, representing a 3 percentage point growth from August. On the other hand, retailers anticipated no significant change in their business in September, with 76% of them predicting that their sales would decrease year-on-year, down by 1 percentage point from August.

The business of restaurants & similar establishments and retailers showed a slight improvement in August. There were 24% of the interviewed restaurants

& similar establishments recording a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance, an increase of 6 percentage points from July. As regards retail trade, 21% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales rise or stable performance in August, up by 5 percentage points from the preceding month.

In August, the proportions of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (36%) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (32%) registering a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance grew by 12 percentage points and 5 percentage points respectively from July. Meanwhile, the proportion of Western Restaurants recording a year-on-year decline of fifty percent or more in receipts fell by 7 percentage points from July to 48% (Table 1).

Among the interviewed establishments, the shares of Chinese Restaurants (94%) and Western Restaurants (91%) expecting their receipts to decrease year-on-year in September rose by 8 percentage points and 6 percentage points respectively from August, whereas the corresponding proportion of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (58%) dropped by 11 percentage points.

Moreover, 62% of the Western Restaurants anticipated a year-on-year decline of fifty percent or more in receipts in September, representing a 2 percentage point growth from August (Table 2).

The proportion of Motor Vehicle Retailers (67%) reporting a year-on-year sales

rise or steady performance in August surged by 45 percentage points from July. Meanwhile, 80% of the interviewed Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers registered a year-on-year sales decline, a decrease of 20 percentage points from the preceding month (Table 3).

Among the interviewed retailers, the proportions of Motor Vehicle Retailers (33%) and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (89%) forecasting a year-on- year sales decrease in September dropped by 22 percentage points and 11 percentage points respectively from August, whereas the corresponding share of Department Stores (82%) rose by 9 percentage points. Meanwhile, 40% of the Leather Goods Retailers and 78% of the Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers predicted that their receipts in September would decrease by fifty percent or more year-on-year, down by 20 percentage points and 11 percentage points respectively from the preceding month. The corresponding proportion of Department Stores rose by 9 percentage points from August to 55% (Table 4).

Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade

Results presented in this report were not extrapolated and only reflect the business performance and expectations of the sampling units. In order to achieve timeliness of the results, restaurants and retailers may not get hold of the actual sales figures at the time of data collection.

Owing to the above stated limitations, the Survey results only serve as a reference on the business trends of the surveyed industries. Hence, it is recommended to take into account other relevant data when evaluating the overall business performance of these industries.

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, which comprises 188 restaurants & similar establishments and 135 retailers that accounted for 50% and 65% of the respective industry’s receipts in 2018. The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
