In January 2020, the proportions of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (68%) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (64%) showing a year-on- year decline in receipts surged by 30 percentage points and 20 percentage points respectively from December 2019. Meanwhile, 43% of the Chinese Restaurants recorded a year-on-year growth in receipts, an increase of 22 percentage points from December last year attributable to the Lunar New Year (which fell in February last year) (Table 1).

The interviewed restaurants & similar establishments and retailers expected a significant slowdown in business in February, with 89% of the interviewed restaurants

& similar establishments and 59% of the retailers anticipating a year-on-year decline of 50% or more in receipts.

In January 2020, the business of restaurants & similar establishments and retailers was adversely affected by the epidemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia. There were 58% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments recording a year-on-year decline in receipts in January, an increase of 5 percentage points from December 2019. Meanwhile, 23% of the interviewed establishments reported a year-on-year rise in receipts, representing a 1 percentage point decrease from December last year.

As regards retail trade, 48% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales decrease in January, a growth of 7 percentage points from December 2019.

On the other hand, 35% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales increase in January, down by 8 percentage points from December last year.

Among the interviewed establishments, 95% of both the Japanese & Korean Restaurants and Chinese Restaurants anticipated a year-on-year decline of 50% or more in receipts in February. The corresponding proportions of Western Restaurants and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops both stood at 84% (Table 2).

There were 80% of the interviewed Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers and

46% of the Department Stores showing a year-on-year sales decrease in January 2020, up notably by 40 percentage points and 27 percentage points respectively from December 2019. On the other hand, 56% of the Motor Vehicle Retailers registered a year-on-year sales increase in January, on account of a relatively low base of comparison in the same month last year (Table 3).

Among the interviewed retailers, 94% of the interviewed Watches, Clocks &

Jewellery Retailers and 73% of the Department Stores expected a year-on- year sales decrease of 50% or more in February. Moreover, the corresponding proportions of Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers and Leather Goods Retailers both reached 80% (Table 4).

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, comprising 186 restaurants & similar establishments (accounting for 53% of the industry’s receipts) and 136 retailers (accounting for 70% of the industry’s receipts). The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.

Results presented in this report were not extrapolated and only reflect the business performance and expectations of the sampling units. In order to achieve timeliness of the results, restaurants and retailers may not get hold of the actual sales figures at the time of data collection.

Owing to the above stated limitations, the Survey results only serve as a reference on the business trends of the surveyed industries. Hence, it is recommended to take into account other relevant data when evaluating the overall business performance of these industries.
