There were 17% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments recording a year-on-year rise in receipts in May, an increase of 12 percentage points from April. Meanwhile, 73% of the interviewed establishments reported a year-on-year decline in receipts, down by 16 percentage points from the preceding month.

Restaurants' perceptions of year-on-year changes in receipts As regards retail trade, 16% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales rise, a 7 percentage point growth from April. On the other hand, the proportion of interviewed retailers recording a year-on-year sales decrease in May dropped by 7 percentage points from April to 80%.
In terms of the business outlook for June, the proportion of interviewed restaurants and similar establishments expecting their receipts to increase year-on- year or remain steady rose by 6 percentage points from May to 25%, whereas the corresponding share for retailers (21%) went down by 1 percentage point.
Attributable to a boost in consumer spending spurred by the launch of electronic consumption cards, the shares of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (53%) and Chinese Restaurants (17%) registering a year-on-year rise in receipts in May surged by 36 percentage points and 13 percentage points respectively from April. On the other hand, the proportion of restaurants &
similar establishments reporting a year-on-year decline in receipts decreased, with the corresponding shares of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (75%) and Western Restaurants (78%) dropping by 12 percentage points and 11 percentage points respectively (Table 1).
Among the interviewed establishments, the share of Chinese Restaurants expecting their receipts to increase year-on-year or remain steady in June rose by 10 percentage points from May to 20%, while the corresponding proportion of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (39%) stayed the same as in May.
Meanwhile, 56% of the Western Restaurants anticipated a year-on-year decline of fifty percent or more in receipts in June, a decrease of 11 percentage points from May (Table 2).

100.0As regards retail trade, the proportion of Department Stores (27%) reporting a year-on-year sales rise in May expanded by 18 percentage points from April, whereas the corresponding share of Supermarkets (89%) stayed at the same level as in April. Meanwhile, 56% of the Motor Vehicle Retailers recorded a year-on-year sales decrease, a drop of 11 percentage points from April. All of the interviewed retailers of Leather Goods, Watches, Clocks & Jewellery, Adults' Clothing and Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles registered a year-on-year sales decline (Table 3).

Among the interviewed retailers, 89% of the Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers and 80% of the Leather Goods Retailers predicted that their receipts in June would decrease by fifty percent or more year-on-year; besides, there were 50% of the Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers who shared the same expectations, a fall of 40 percentage points from May. Meanwhile, the proportion of interviewed Supermarkets expecting their receipts in June to increase year-on-year or remain steady stood at 89%, the same as for May (Table 4).

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, comprising 186 restaurants & similar establishments (accounting for 53% of the industry’s receipts) and 135 retailers (accounting for 70% of the industry’s receipts). The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
Results presented in this report were not extrapolated and only reflect the business performance and expectations of the sampling units. In order to achieve timeliness of the results, restaurants and retailers may not get hold of the actual sales figures at the time of data collection.
Owing to the above stated limitations, the Survey results only serve as a reference on the business trends of the surveyed industries. Hence, it is recommended to take into account other relevant data when evaluating the overall business performance of these industries.
