Retail sales stabilised, with 35% of the interviewed retailers showing a year-on-year sales increase in March, up by 17 percentage points from February. On the other hand, 45% of the retailers registered a year-on-year sales decrease in March, a 24 percentage point drop from February.

30.1 Among the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments, 30%
registered a year-on-year rise in receipts in March, higher than expected by 14 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Western Restaurants (53%) and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (31%) exceeded the forecast by 32 percentage points and 20 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, 36% of the interviewed establishments recorded a year-on-year decrease in receipts, 6 percentage points higher than the forecast (Table 2).

In March, the proportions of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (35%) and Western Restaurants (26%) reporting a year-on-year decline in receipts increased by 13 percentage points and 11 percentage points respectively from February, whereas the corresponding share of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (18%) reduced by 17 percentage points.
Meanwhile, 17% of the Japanese & Korean Restaurants recorded a year- on-year growth in receipts, a decrease of 13 percentage points from February (Table 1).
The business of restaurants & similar establishments remained subdued in March, with 36% of the interviewed establishments recording a year-on-year decline in receipts, a growth of 3 percentage points from February. Meanwhile, 30% of the establishments reported a year-on-year increase in receipts in March, down by 4 percentage points from February.
The interviewed restaurants & similar establishments expected no significant improvement in business in April, with 35% of them anticipating a year-on-year decrease in receipts, up by 5 percentage points from March. Meanwhile, 18% of the interviewed establishments forecasted a year-on-year growth in receipts, a 3 percentage point rise from March.
Retailers expected their sales to be stable in April, with 68% of them expecting their sales to increase year-on-year or remain steady, an increase of 4 percentage points from March. Meanwhile, 32% of them predicted a year-on-year sales decrease.

As regards retail trade, the proportion of Supermarkets recording a year-on-year sales increase in March surged by 45 percentage points from February to 67%. Meanwhile, 55% of the Adults’ Clothing Retailers and 56% of the Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers reported a year-on-year sales decrease in March, down by 30 percentage points and 28 percentage points respectively. Moreover, all of the interviewed Supermarkets and Leather Goods Retailers registered year-on-year sales rise or stable performance (Table 4).

Among the interviewed retailers, 35% showed a year-on-year sales rise in March, higher than expected by 18 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Supermarkets (67%) and Leather Goods Retailers (80%) surpassed the forecast by 22 percentage points and 20 percentage points respectively. Meanwhile, 45% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales decrease in March, 9 percentage points higher than predicted. The corresponding proportions of Motor Vehicle Retailers (80%), Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (80%) and Adults' Clothing Retailers (55%) each exceeded the forecast by 20 percentage points (Table 5).
About 44% of the Japanese & Korean Restaurants expected a year-on- year decline in receipts in April, up by 22 percentage points from March;
yet, the corresponding share of Western Restaurants (16%) fell by 16 percentage points.

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, comprising 186 restaurants & similar establishments (accounting for 53% of the industry’s receipts) and 136 retailers (accounting for 70% of the industry’s receipts) after rotating some of the samples. The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.

All of the Leather Goods Retailers expected a year-on-year sales rise or steady performance in April, with the proportion rising by 20 percentage points from March; the corresponding share of Department Stores remained at 91%.
