Among the interviewed establishments, the shares of Chinese Restaurants (14%) and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (24%) expecting their receipts to increase year-on-year or remain steady in August rose by 3 percentage points and 2 percentage points respectively from July, whereas the corresponding proportion of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (32%) dropped by 7 percentage points. Meanwhile, 60% of the Western Restaurants anticipated a year-on-year decline of fifty percent or more in receipts in August, which is equivalent to a 7 percentage point decrease from the preceding month (Table 2).

In July, the proportions of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (74%), Chinese Restaurants (90%) and Western Restaurants (95%) registering a year-on-year decrease in receipts lifted by 9 percentage points, 8 percentage points and 6 percentage points respectively from June. On the other hand, 14% of the Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops recorded a year-on-year growth in receipts, up by 4 percentage points from the previous month (Table 1).

There were 83% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments recording a year-on-year decline in receipts in July, a 4 percentage point growth from June. Meanwhile, 12% of the interviewed establishments reported a year-on-year increase in receipts, the same level as in June.

Restaurants' perceptions of year-on-year changes in receipts As regards retail trade, 84% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales decrease in July, a rise of 4 percentage points over the preceding month. On the other hand, 12% of the interviewed retailers recorded a year-on-year sales rise, a decrease of 4 percentage points from June.

In terms of the business outlook for August, both industries expected a slight improvement in business. There were 22% of the interviewed restaurants &

similar establishments and 23% of the retailers anticipating a year-on-year rise in receipts or steady performance, up by 3 percentage points and 1 percentage point respectively from July.

The interviewed retailers of Leather Goods, Adults' Clothing and Cosmetics &

Sanitary Articles reported a year-on-year sales decline in July; the corresponding proportion of Motor Vehicle Retailers (78%) surged by 33 percentage points, while the share of Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers fell by 6 percentage points to 94%. Meanwhile, 78% of the Supermarkets recorded a year-on-year sales increase in July, a growth of 11 percentage points from the preceding month (Table 3).

Among the interviewed retailers, 89% of the Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers and 70% of the Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers predicted that their receipts in August would decrease by fifty percent or more year-on-year.

Besides, 60% of the Leather Goods Retailers and 46% of the Department Stores shared the same expectations, yet the proportions decreased by 40 percentage points and 18 percentage points respectively from July.

Meanwhile, the proportion of interviewed Supermarkets expecting their receipts in August to increase year-on-year or remain steady stood at 78%, the same as for July (Table 4).

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, which comprises 188 restaurants & similar establishments and 135 retailers that accounted for 50% and 65% of the respective industry’s receipts in 2018. The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.

Results presented in this report were not extrapolated and only reflect the business performance and expectations of the sampling units. In order to achieve timeliness of the results, restaurants and retailers may not get hold of the actual sales figures at the time of data collection.

Owing to the above stated limitations, the Survey results only serve as a reference on the business trends of the surveyed industries. Hence, it is recommended to take into account other relevant data when evaluating the overall business performance of these industries.
