Background? The alcohol and its emerging problems among Taiwan aborigines not only affect their mental and physical health but also their marriage and family.
Empirical investigations on the health of aborigines are relatively few, and the issues of drinking behavior and the family are also lacking concerns. This study discusses the correlation between family functioning and the drinking behavior of Thao people. I hope that this study can be a further investigation and a reference for enacting related policy.
purpose? The purposes of this investigation were to understand the health condition and the factors of its influence, to explore the influence of drinking behavior and family functioning of Thao, and to analyze the correlation of drinking behavior and family functioning.
Methods? This is a retrospect case study. The data was of secondary data, i.e. of cross-sectional data. Structured questionnaire was developed and administrated to 139 Thao residents aged 16 and over, 121 persons were successful
interviewed, with a response rate of 87.1%. The SPSS and SAS statistics software packages were used to analyze all kinds of statistics data. Results? The prediction of the influence on health, listed in order of seriousness, is the age group of 20 to 39 (with the age group of 16 to 19 as reference value), drinking behavior, and the age group of 65 and over(with the age group of 16 to 19 as reference value). The prediction of the influence on drinking behavior, listed in order of seriousness, is families with drinking problems, sex, physical illness, marriage, and people being self-aware of family dysfunction. The prediction of the influence on family
function, listed in order of seriousness, is those drinking beh avior, those age 20 to 39 (with age group of 16 to 19 as reference value), and the families with emotional problems.
Conclusion?Through understanding the factors influence the drinking behavior and family function and their correlation among Thao people, I hope that this study can be a further investigation and a reference for enacting related policy.
