Coverage of the Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages of the Gaming Sector for the second quarter of 2010 excluded junket promoters and junket associates.

Paid Employees

At the end of the second quarter of 2010, the Gaming Sector had 43 870 employees, down slightly by 0.2% year-on-year.

Analyzed by occupations that are directly related to betting services, 18 684 were dealers, up by 3.3% year-on-year; 11 724 were hard & soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc., down by 4.0%.

In addition, 5 060 were casino & slot machine attendants, security guards, surveillance room operators, etc., down slightly by 0.5% year-on-year.

Vacancies and Employee Turnover

At the end of June 2010, number of vacancies of the Gaming Sector increased substantially by 74.0% year-on-year to 628, with 174 for dealers, 96 for hard & soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc., and 165 for services and sales workers.

The job vacancy rate of the Gaming Sector rose by 0.7 percentage point year-on-year, with that for dealers, and service and sales workers increasing by 0.6 and 0.8 percentage point respectively.

In terms of recruitment prerequisites, 52.5% of the vacancies required working experience; 66.3%

required senior secondary education or higher and 31.9% required junior secondary education or lower.

Besides Cantonese, other preferred language skills were Mandarin (63.2%) and English (45.1%).

With respect to the indicators that measure the inflow and outflow of human resources of the sector, the employee recruitment rate of the Gaming Sector was 4.2%, down by 4.9 percentage points year-on-year, whilst the employee turnover rate was 4.1%, down by 1.0 percentage point.

Earnings

In June 2010, average earnings of full-time employees of the Gaming Sector stood at MOP15 390, up by 0.9% year-on-year. Average earnings of full-time resident employees increased by 3.6%

year-on-year to MOP15 210, while that of full-time non-resident employees dropped by 20.3% to MOP18 840.

Average earnings of dealers increased by 3.6% over June 2009 to MOP13 590 and that of hard &

soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc. rose by

1.5% to MOP18 880. Average earnings of casino & slot machine attendants, security guards,

surveillance room operators, etc. amounted to MOP10 020, down slightly by 0.4% year-on-year.

y Employee recruitment rate: The percentage of newly hired full-time employees in the average total number of full-time employees in the reference quarter.

y According to the “International Standard Classification of Occupations” of the International Labour Organization, positions such as dealers, casino floorpersons, cage cashiers, etc. are grouped under “Clerks”.

y Earnings refer to the amount paid to employees for the hours worked or services provided during the reference period, including basic salary, regular allowances, subsidies, gratuities, overtime payments and regular payments-in-kind. Excluding double-pay, year-end bonuses, profit-sharing and other similar bonuses.
